Planting Instructions
Inside your RootBox™ seed kit, you will find everything you need to start growing your vegetable, herb and/or chili garden. The biodegradable pots provided are ideal starter pots for growing your seeds.
- Place some of your compost in one of the pots, keeping some aside to cover the seeds.
- Sow the seeds and cover with a fine layer of the remaining compost.
- Put the name of your marker and stick it in the pot.
- Once the seedlings are a few centimeters high can transplant the entire biodegradable pot containing the seedlings straight into your herb patch, a larger pot or a window box.
- Alternatively, when the seedlings are large enough to handle, carefully thin them out and transplant them as recommended in the notes for each seeds variety.
- Zoom into the table below for specific info .
VEGETABLE SEEDS| When to sow| Where to sow| What to do next|
Maturity| Handy Tip| Nutritional value
---|---|---|---|---|---|---
Carrot seeds – Chantenay Red Cored| April to July| Sow thinly direct into the
growing site 2cm (¾””) deep in rows 30cm (12″”) apart. If possible sow
carefully so that thinning is not necessary .| Carrot fly is attracted by the
smell whilst thinning, If you have to thin the seedlings, do so in the
evening. Water before thinning and remove all the debris. Do not transplant.
Aim for roots 5-7cm (2-3″”) apart. Young Carrots can always be pulled
alternately to ‘thin as you eat’.| June to November| A good variety for an
early exhibition use, Try making holes with a bar, filling with compost and
sowing
seed for the large specimen carrots. Try not to grow on freshly manured
grounds as this can produce
forking of roots.| High in antioxidant beta-carotene which converts to vitamin
A in the body.
Lettuce Mixed Leaves| End of February to July| Sowings can be made underglass,
sow seeds into pots or trays of seed sowing compost at a temperature of 15-20C
and lightly cover seeds with sprinkling of
vermiculite or compost. Alternatively sow seeds from
April thinly along rows 1.5cm (1/2in) deep and 30cm
(12in) apart direct in the vegetable plot.| Sowings made underglass can be
pricked out into individual pots or
module trays and grown on until ready to harden off and plant out into the
vegetable plot 30cm (12in) apart between the plants and the rows.
Seedlings sown direct outside can be thinned once large enough to handle to
30cm (12in) apart. Thinnings can also be transplanted into other rows, watered
in well during hot dry spells.| 10-12 weeks from sowing| Try broadcasting seed
into modular trays and plant without thinning and harvest as required as ‘cut
and come again’ varieties.| A good source of the
antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lutein and vitamin C as well as vitamin K
and
folic acid.
Spinach Giant Winter| June to September| Direct into growing site , sow thinly
in shallow drills 2cm (3/4in) deep with 30cm (12in) between the rows.| As
seedlings grow gradually thin out seedlings to 15cm (6in) apart. Water well
during dry spells of weather. Pick leaves as required.| October onwards| To
ensure a continuous supply of leaves try sowing in small lots each month.| A
good source of pro-vitamin
A, vitamin C, lutein and dietary fibre.
Cucumber Gherkin National| February to May| Sow seed on edge to prevent
rotting 1.5cm (1/2″) deep in individual 9cm(3 1/2in) pots under glass at a
constant
day and night temperature of 21°C.| As soon as the seedlings have formed 3
true leaves, transplant into 15cm (6″) pots. When the plants are about 10cm
(4″) tall, plant out into final
positions into large pots or growbags underglass. Provide some form of support
and tie in stems as required. Can be planted outdoors once
hardened off and all risk of frost has past. Grow up against netting or
allow to trail along the ground.| July to September| Cucumbers prefer a moist
atmosphere. Keep well watered and feed regularly once the fruits start to
set.| High in potassium and low in calories.

small trays of compost and lightly cover the seeds with a sprinkling of
compost , and place at a temperature of 15-20°C.
Alternatively sow direct outside in April and May into
shallow seed drills.| Prick out seedlings individually to 7cm (3″) pots, once
large enough to
handle. Grow on in cooler conditions , then gradually harden off plants in a
cold frame before planting out after risk of frost has passed. Transplant to
final positions 30cm (12in) apart or into larger containers, or grow a few in
pots on a light windowsill all year round. Direct sown seedlings can be
thinned to 15cm (6in) apart then lifted and transplanted to final positions
once large enough to handle.| All the year round| Add leaves to boiling water
as a tasty Tea, reported to soothe sore throats and cold symptoms. Plants
require cutting back each year to prevent straggly
growth.| Sage is an excellent source of fiber, Vitamin A, folate, calcium,
iron, magnesium, manganese and folic acid.
Parsley Darki| February to July| Early sowings in pots or trays under glass at
13°C. Later sowings direct in growing site 1cm deep| Glasshouse sowings should
be thinned to 5-6cm apart before gradually hardening off and planting out in
April 25cm apart. Outdoor sowings
should be gradually thinned to eventual spacing of 25cm. The thinning’s can be
potted for winter use.| June onwards.| Although Parsley leaves will be
available during
most of the winter, a potted up plant on a
windowsill ensures a winter supply. When sowing Parsley outdoors, poor boiling
water into the seed drills first to kill off weed seeds and to warm up the
soil, thus increasing germination.|
Herb Thyme Perennial| February to May| Sow seeds underglass 0.5cm (¼”) deep,
in small trays of compost and lightly cover the seeds with a sprinkling of
compost , and place at a temperature of 15-20°C .
Alternatively sow direct outside in April and May into
shallow seed drills.| Prick out seedlings individually to 8cm (3″) pots, once
large enough to
handle. Grow on in cooler conditions , then gradually harden off plants in a
cold frame before planting out after risk of frost has passed. Transplant to
final positions 30cm (12in) apart or into larger containers, or grow a few in
pots on a light windowsill all year round. Direct sown seedlings can be
thinned to 15cm (6in) apart then lifted and transplanted to final positions
once large enough to handle.| All year round| Give plants cloche protection or
lift a clump and pot up and bring under cover in autumn to allow picking into
winter.| Thyme contains high
amounts of Vitamin C, A and Iron.

Prick out seedlings when large enough to handle into 7cm (3in) pots and grow
on under glass. Once plants reach 10cm (4in) high transplant into
growbags or 25cm (10in) pots and grow on under glass. Feed once a week with
tomato fertilizer once first fruits have set.| Late July to October.| Water
