Shifting into Gear

November 20, 2002, Auburn Hills, Mich. –

  • One of the coolest cars on the road shifts into gear and gets even more fun to drive. The 2003 Chrysler PT Turbo is now available with a standard heavy-duty five-speed manual Getrag 288S transaxle.
  • “The new Getrag transaxle has been proven reliable in Europe for years,” said Larry Lyons, Vice president of Vehicle Product Team Engineering. “We’re sure Chrysler PT Turbo owners interested in performance driving will be just as pleased with the precision feel and fun that this manual transaxle offers.”
  • Chrysler PT Turbo owners choosing the new manual transaxle also will appreciate the vehicle’s added performance.
  • Engineering estimates show Getrag-equipped vehicles are capable of 0-60 mph in an estimated 7.5 seconds, about a half-second improvement compared with automatic transaxle PT Turbo vehicles. Quarter-mile speed estimates also come in faster at 15.8 seconds versus 16.5 seconds.
  • “So many of our Chrysler PT Cruiser customers, and especially those looking at a PT Turbo, are interested in a fun driving experience,” said Tom Marinelli, Vice President-Chrysler Marketing. “With the new combination of our High Output Turbo engine and the Getrag manual transaxle, we look for our manual-equipped PT Turbo vehicles to reach 25 percent of PT Turbo sales, compared with the 15 percent we typically see for naturally aspirated PT Cruisers.”
  • Besides the added performance under the hood, manual Chrysler PT Turbo customers also will notice improvements at the pump. With an estimated 21mpg city and 27 mpg highway, fuel economy in the manual PT Turbo is 2 mpg better in each respect than a comparable automatic PT Turbo.
  • In addition to the standard manual transaxle, 2003 Chrysler PT Turbo vehicles also offer an optional automatic transaxle with AutoStick®. Both transaxles are coupled with a high-output, turbocharged 2.4-liter engine that delivers 215 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 245 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm, with more than 90 percent of peak torque from 2, 300 to 5,000 rpm.
  • The Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price for the manual Chrysler PT Turbo is $22,415, excluding a $590 destination charge. Automatic transaxle Chrysler PT Turbo vehicles with AutoStick are priced at $22,855, excluding destination charges.
  • The 2003 Chrysler PT Turbo is made at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico. From its launch as a production vehicle in February 2000 through October 2002, 471,899 Chrysler PT Cruiser vehicles have been sold worldwide.
