-
1. **Disconnect the water heater from any power source.**
Gas : Twist the dial on the top of the thermostat from the ON to the OFF position. Electric : Switch the circuit breaker for the water heater to the OFF position.
CAUTION ELECTRICITY / GAS -
Turn off the water supply.
-
Release the pressure from the tank using the drain valve, ensuring it is connected to a drain or a bucket to collect the water.
It’s not necessary to empty the tank completely; just ensure the water level is below the anode rod port. Retaining some water in the tank can make it easier to remove the sacrificial anode in the next steps.
If the drain valve is blocked, the pressure relief valve is an option, but it’s not our recommended method.
CAUTION HOT WATER -
Locate a 110 volts power outlet.
The Corro-Protec power supply cord length is 12 feet long. This should be enough to reach an outlet. If it’s not the case, please have a new 110 volts power outlet installed by a professional electrician that will ensure proper installation according to the electric code. -
Locate the sacrificial anode rod.
All water heaters with a tank have an anode rod. For most water heaters, the anode rod is located in a dedicated anode port and can typically be found under a plastic cap and a foam-insulated layer on the top of the tank. It may be necessary to remove this insulation to gain access to the rod. Here are some standard locations of the water heater anode rod :
UNCERTAIN ABOUT THE LOCATION OF THE EXISTING ANODE ?
Consult your digital or printed water heater owner’s manual for easy guidance.
Please note that for almost all Bradford White tanks and a very few models
from other brands, the anode rod is located in the hot water outlet.
Please refer to page 12 for further details.
6. Unscrew the sacrificial anode rod counterclockwise using the ratchet wrench fitted with a 1 1/16’’ socket.
NOTICE
Use a 1 1/16’’ hexagonal (6 points) socket to avoid damaging the anode head.
1. Use a breaker bar or add a PVC pipe to your wrench to create a leverage effect.
2. Use an impact wrench.
3. Visit our website by scanning this code for more tips on how to remove a stuck anode rod or visit [corroprotec.com/removal‑tips](http://corroprotec.com/removal%E2%80%91tips).
4. If you cannot remove the sacrificial anode rod after following the steps listed above and those online at corroprotec.com/removal‑tips, please visit [corroprotec.com/help](http://corroprotec.com/help) for assistance. Our resources are available 24/7 to help you address the problem. We offer a variety of solutions to ensure a successful installation of our product.
7. **Slowly remove the existing sacrificial anode rod.**
Should you have to cut it into pieces due to limited space, hold the bottom
with pliers to keep it from slipping inside the tank. If a part of the
sacrificial anode rod does fall into the tank, don’t worry; Corro-Protec
Powered Anode Rod will still function as usual.
DANGER
Cutting the rod can cause CUTTING AND / OR HEAT INJURIES; proceed with
caution.
CAUTION PLEASE DISPOSE IN A SAFE WAY and as per your municipality
environmental waste regulations.
8. Write down your Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod serial number :
It is located on the stainless steel part of the anode. You’ll need this information for the warranty registration.
-
Cover the threaded part of the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod with Teflon tape.
Apply 5 to 6 layers of Teflon tape counterclockwise. -
Insert the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod and screw it by hand. Make sure the threadsare aligned before screwing.
If the anode isn’t screwing in easily, check for and clear any sediment or buildup on the threads. -
Screw the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod clockwise using the ratchet wrench fitted with a 31 mm socket.
If you have enough clearance, you can use an adjustable pipe wrench to install the anode.
NOTICE
DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE WHEN TIGHTENING.
The Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod will sit higher than the sacrificial anode rod. Depending on your water heater, the newly installed anode rod may be higher or lower than our pictures. -
Install the black grounding connection on one of the tank cover screws.
Make sure the ground eyelet is in direct contact with the metal and not on the paint. -
Insert the female connection in the exceeding end‑piece of the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod and crimp it down using universal pliers.
-
Turn on water supply and make sure the tank is full.
When refilling the water heater, always open a hot water faucet to allow any trapped air to escape. -
Connect the power source.
Gas : Twist the dial on the top of the thermostat from the OFF to the ON position.
Electric : Switch the circuit breaker for the water heater to the ON position. -
Connect the power supply to the 110 volts outlet.
The indicator light located on the power supply will automatically light up after a few seconds.
If the light stays off, please follow the instructions below :
If the green indicator light doesn’t turn ON :

Our True Promises
Our Powered Anode Rod system is crafted to effectively prevent corrosion
inside your water heater tank. But remember, while we take pride in our
20-year warranty on the Powered Anode system’s performance, this doesn’t
extend to the entire water heater.
Different water heaters, depending on their production and quality, might
require other parts to be replaced over time, regardless of our corrosion
protection. We can’t warranty the entirety of a water heater—after all, we
don’t manufacture them. We focus on what we do best : preventing internal
corrosion. However, maintenance on other components, unrelated to corrosion,
might still be necessary.
Furthermore, our product is not just built to last; we back its durability
with a 20‑year warranty period. Always keep in mind : our commitment is to the
efficacy and longevity of our product, not to external factors beyond our
control.
Maintenance
- Effortless annual check‑up with Corro‑Protec !
- With our Corro-Protec system, annual maintenance is a breeze. All you need to do is take a moment each year to confirm that the green indicator light is ON.
- This indicates the optimal amount of current is flowing within your tank. It’s our way of assuring you that our protection against corrosion is active and robust. Simply put, a glowing green light means your tank is protected.
Our Transparent Warranty
-
What’s covered ? Our commitment is to the integrity and functionality of the Corro-Protec Powered Anode system.
We guarantee it against defects in material or workmanship when installed and operated as intended. -
How Long Is the Warranty Valid ? For installations in single-family residences, we offer a complimentary 20-year Extended Warranty. This no-cost extension is our way of ensuring that you can enjoy long-term protection and support for your product without worry. By registering your product on our website within 90 days of purchase, you help us safeguard your warranty service for the future. This simple step guarantees that even if your original purchase documents are misplaced over the years, we can still verify and honor your warranty claim. If the product is not registered, the standard 5-year warranty remains in place.
Does Corro‑Protec Warranty My Water Heater ? It’s simple logic : we only vouch for what we create. While we’re proud of Corro-Protec system’s top-tier quality, we can’t guarantee the entire water heater since we don’t manufacture it. Just as you wouldn’t warranty something you didn’t craft, neither can we. Our focus remains on ensuring our product excels in its role within your water heater. Water heaters, depending on their make and quality, might require other parts to be replaced over time, irrespective of our corrosion protection. We focus on what we do best : preventing internal corrosion. However, maintenance on other components, unrelated to corrosion, might still be necessary.
Corro‑Protec’s Limited Warranty
Corro-Protec (“Company”) guarantees to the original purchaser (“Customer”)
that the Powered Anode system (“Product”) is free from defects in materials

Product or component. The coverage is degressive over the Extended Warranty

- Starting year 6, coverage is reduced by 5 % each year, meaning that at year 15, coverage would be at 50 %.
- In a scenario where the anode rod is found defective at year 15, the Company will cover 50 % of the cost of repair or replacement. The Customer will be responsible for the remaining cost. The replacement part will inherit the remainder of the original Product’s Warranty Period or ninety (90) days from the service date, whichever is greater.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the powered anode rod for other purposes?
Use the appliance only as described in the manual to ensure safety and optimal performance.
How often should I check the powered anode rod?
Periodically inspect for any signs of corrosion or leaks, especially after installation.
Can I install the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod in a Bradford White Water Heater ?
Since most Bradford White water heaters have the sacrificial anode built into the hot water outlet, you need the Corro-Protec model adapted for Bradford White water heaters. Among other features, it comes with the required molded fitting (a Wye fitting) for the installation of the Powered Anode Rod in the hot water outlet. If you ordered the regular Corro-Protec instead of the Badford White model, please visit corroprotec.com/help for assistance and ensure you get the correct model.
My water heater has 2 sacrificial anodes. Should I replace both ?
The answer is no and that is why Corro-Protec offers different models adapted to tank sizes. If your water heater has two anodes, you can replace one of them with our Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod and leave the other one in place. Even if you install the Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod to eliminate the rotten egg smell in your hot water, you don’t need to remove the second sacrificial anode.
Do I have to unplug the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod if I turn off the hot water for several months at our cottage ?
The Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod does not require any special maintenance. Leave it connected at all times, and it will work only if necessary. Even if you turn off the hot water tank, if there is still water in the tank, the Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod will remain functional to prevent corrosion. If you empty the tank, the anode will turn off automatically because the water acts as a conductor between the anode and the ground. A powered anode does not function as a heating element. There is no danger in emptying the water from the tank without disconnecting the anode.
Can I use the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod if I have a water softener ?
Yes, it is even highly recommended to install a powered anode if you have a water softener. The water softener generally makes the water more aggressive to the tanks, which reduces the lifespan of your hot water tank and creates a more conducive environment for the development of sulfur reducing bacteria which creates the rotten egg smell in hot water. The Corro-Protec Powered Anode Rod will automatically adjust to provide optimum rust protection.
What is the annual power consumption of the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod ?
Since the amount of current used by the anode will vary from region to region due to the hardness of the water, it is impossible to give an exact answer. However, on average, the anode will use 10 KWh per year. If we take the average price of electricity in the United States, the cost to run the anode 24 hours a day all year round is under US$ 3.
Is it normal to read a voltage lower than what is indicated on the Corro‑Protec Powered Anode Rod power supply ?
Yes, because the voltage adjusts automatically depending on the resistance of your water. A very low voltage means that your water is very conductive and the anode does not need to send much current to provide adequate protection.
