INTRODUCTION
WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS
WARNING
Do not operate this wheelchair on streets, roadways, or any surfaces with vehicular traffic.
MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY
This wheelchair conforms to the requirements of ANSI/RESNA WC/ Vol.
1-Section 19 ONLY for users weighing more than 50 lbs. The wheelchair has been
dynamically tested in a forward-facing mode, and it must be in a forward-
facing position during transport in a motor vehicle. Use this wheel- chair
with an approved vehicle-installed restraining system that includes both
pelvic and shoulder belts to reduce the possibility of head and chest impacts
with vehicle components. Postural supports and belts may be used in a moving
vehicle but should not be relied upon to replace a vehicle-installed
restraining system that has been designed and tested for this purpose.
HEADREST EXTENSION MUST BE USED TO CONFORM TO THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS.
WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS (CON’T)
STABILITY
The DynaRide™ Pediatric Wheelchair is designed to be safe and stable during normal transport as long as the user’s center of gravity is maintained in the chair. It is important to exercise caution when performing any activity that shifts your center of gravity while seated in the chair. Never reach so far forward that it requires shifting your seated position or leaning out of the chair. When you need to reach for objects that require you to shift your body position, ensure that the front casters are facing forward (this will help extend the wheelbase and stabilize the chair) and be sure that the wheel locks are engaged. Never apply weight or lean on the top of the wheelchair back, as this can increase the risk of a tip-over or fall. When reaching toward the back of the chair, only extend your arms as far as they can reach without having to shift your seated position.
Always engage both wheel locks before getting in or out of chair. Locks are engaged by pushing handle completely forward.
RAMPS AND SLOPES
Be certain of your physical capabilities and limitations before attempting to
propel the wheelchair up a ramp. It is recommended that you consult with a
qualified professional to learn the proper techniques for ramp negotiation
before attempting to do so on your own.
Do not use the chair on an incline steeper than 10% without assistance. Never
turn or change direction on a slope and always stay in the center of the ramp.
If it is necessary to stop while on a slope, avoid abrupt or sudden movements
when you resume moving. Never use the rear wheel locks as breaks to slow or
stop your chair as this could result in veering or tipping to one side.
SAFE TRANSFER
It is recommended that you work with a qualified healthcare professional before attempting to transfer on your own. Ensure that the wheelchair is on a smooth, stable, and level surface with wheel locks engaged before transfer- ring. Position the wheelchair as close as possible to the seat you are trans- ferring to. Rotate the front casters until they face fully forward. Ensure that armrests are out of the way and remove or swing footrests out of the way if possible. Do not stand on or apply weight to the footrest.
SEAT BELT RESTRAINTS
Belt restraints should be positioned securely so they make full contact across
the front of the body. Make sure they are not wrapped around or over
wheelchair components such as an armrest or wheel.
See figures 1 and 2 for correct and incorrect positioning of belt restraints.
PROPER POSITIONING OF BELT RESTRAINTS (Fig. 1)
Restraints should make direct contact across the front of the body and in the area where the thigh and pelvis meet.
IMPROPER POSITIONING OF BELT RESTRAINTS (Fig. 2)
Do not allow belt restraints to wrap around or over wheelchair components as this will keep them from fitting securely across the body.
USES AND ADJUSTMENTS
TO OPEN CHAIR
Open wheelchair by tilting it to one side and pushing down on seat rail until fully opened.
TO CLOSE CHAIR
Fold foot plates to vertical position. Grab seat with both hands at front and back edge and lift—OR tilt to one side and lift up on seat rail.
TO ADJUST WHEEL LOCKS
Adjustments to locks are made by loosening or tightening nut on the carriage bolt. Wheel lock shoe should be embedded at least ⅛″ when locked. Adjust by sliding clamp toward rear wheel while handle is engaged in locked position. Tighten nut and bolt to secure in position. Test to ensure correct locking action before actual use.
TO REMOVE SWING-AWAY FOOTRESTS
Release lock by pushing on the front rigging release lever. Move swing-away footrest out and sideways. Lift to remove.
TO REMOVE ARMREST
Remove armrest by depressing spring button and lifting arm out of front socket.
TO ADJUST FOOTRESTS
When adjusting length of footrests, user should be sitting in wheelchair with
feet on the foot plates.
First lift black tab (A) and then depress both push pins (B). Raise or lower
footplate to preferred position to provide optimal support of thighs. Front
rigging should not be so low that it causes uncomfortable pressure to thighs
at front of seat upholstery. Position footrest at least 2½″ from the ground to
ensure sufficient clearance. (Fig. 3)
TO ADJUST PUSH HANDLES
To raise or lower push handles, release ratchet handle and adjust to desired height. Then tighten ratchet handle to secure in place.
