Description and operation
The Emergency-plug sends a charging signal to an electric vehicle. The
charging signal
automatically switches the vehicle to the P position (parking) or the N
position (neutral). This blocks the vehicle so that it cannot drive away. All
other functions of the vehicle remain usable.

The Emergency-plug is equipped with two different plug types, which means the
Emergency-plug can be used with all plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles with
a charging or communication port.

This chapter contains important instructions for the safe installation and use of the Emergency-plug.

Safety instructions
The following safety instructions must be followed to prevent dangerous
situations:
DANGER
Collision hazard!
Never connect the Emergency-plug to a moving vehicle. Always wait for the
vehicle to come to a standstill before connecting the Emergency-plug to the
charging port.
Crushing hazard!
Always ensure the vehicle is secured according to locally applicable protocols
before disconnecting the Emergency-plug from the vehicle.
WARNING
Safety risk!
- Only use the Emergency-plug as described in this manual.
- Only use the Emergency-plug as an aid. Always follow local rules.
Fire hazard!
Never use a generator as a power source for the Emergency-plug. Always use the recommended battery type as the power source for the Emergency-plug.
CAUTION
Electrocution hazard!
- Do not use the Emergency-plug when damaged or defective. If the Emergency-plug is damaged or defective, contact your supplier.
- Never disassemble, repair, isolate or modify the Emergency-plug yourself. For maintenance and repair, contact a service point approved by Total Safety Solutions.
- Do not insert any objects into the openings of the Emergency-plug. There is a danger of electrocution when inserting objects into external openings.
NOTICE
- Do not drop the Emergency-plug and avoid impacts. Excessive vibration may cause loose connections, which may adversely affect the proper operation of the Emergency-plug.
- Always check the Emergency-plug for damage before use.
- Do not transport, use or store the Emergency-plug outside a temperature range of -20°C to + 50°C.
- Do not use rechargeable or Lithium batteries in the Emergency-plug. The battery life of the Emergency-plug cannot be guaranteed when using non-recommended battery types.
- Always ensure that the plus (+) and minus (-) markings on the battery match the plus (+) and minus (-) markings in the Emergency-plug when inserting the batteries.
- Do not use harsh chemical cleaning agents to clean the Emergency-plug. Always use a soft, damp cloth to clean the Emergency-plug.
Transport
NOTICE
Do not drop the Emergency-plug and avoid impacts. Excessive vibration may
cause loose connections, which may adversely affect the proper operation of
the Emergency-plug.
Always transport the Emergency-plug in the storage case.

Emergency-plug registration
Register the Emergency-plug to extend the warranty period and to be kept
informed of software updates.
To update the Emergency-plug, the Emergency-plug must be registered:

Go to ‘Register’.

Fill in the required details.
The Emergency-plug registration code can be found under the battery cover under the middle battery. -
Push in the battery cover lock and slide the battery cover backwards to remove the battery cover.

Follow the online instructions.
Taking into Use
Remove the battery protector
Before you can use the Emergency-plug, you must remove the battery protector:
- Push in the battery cover lock and slide the battery cover backwards to remove the battery cover.
- Pull out the battery protector from between the batteries.
- Replace the battery cover on the Emergency-plug.
Using the self-test function
NOTICE
Always check the Emergency-plug for damage before use.
Before using the Emergency-plug, you must first perform the self-test function:
- Press the power button.
The Emergency-plug starts the self-test function.
The LED indicator lights up in different colours. Refer to Chapter 2.3. LED indicator colour coding for more information.
The LED indicator lights up green when the self-test function has been performed successfully.
The Emergency-plug is ready for use.
It is recommended to perform the self-test function monthly when the Emergency-plug is not used for a prolonged period. The self-test function checks, among other things, the battery life. By performing the self-test function regularly, you prevent the batteries from being depleted the next time they are used.
Use
Opening the charge port door
Unlocked charge port door
An unlocked charge port door can be opened by pressing the charge port door.
Locked charge port door
A locked charge port door can be opened with the spudger as follows:
- Press the spudger behind the charge port door.
- Use of the spudger:
Tesla vehicle: Move the spudger upwards with a lever movement to open the charge port door.
Other type of vehicle: Move the spudger towards the front of the vehicle with a lever movement to open the charge port door.
Connecting
Make sure you use the correct plug type when connecting the Emergency-plug.
Refer to Chapter 2.2 Plug Types for further information.
Connect the Emergency-plug as follows

Open the vehicle’s charge port door.
-
Press the Emergency-plug power button.
The Emergency-plug starts the self-test function. Refer to Chapter 6.2. Use the self-test function for more information. -
Insert the Emergency-plug into the vehicle charging port. Press the Emergency-plug in firmly. The LED indicator first flashes yellow and then lights up blue.
The LED indicator should light up blue within a maximum of 5 seconds. If the LED indicator reacts differently, refer to Chapter 2.3. LED indicator colour coding.
Check which type of charging connection should be used. Refer to Chapter 2.2 Plug Types for further information.
The vehicle may give an error message when the Emergency-plug is connected. This error message is caused because the vehicle does not receive power through the charging port. This does not affect the proper functioning of the Emergency-plug. The error message disappears automatically when the Emergency- plug is disconnected and the vehicle is switched on again via the power button.
Disconnecting
DANGER
Crushing hazard!
Always ensure the vehicle is secured according to locally applicable protocols before disconnecting the Emergency-plug from the vehicle.
Disconnect the Emergency-plug as follows:
Pull the Emergency-plug to disconnect it from the charging port. The LED indicator flashes red.
Switching off
Switch off the Emergency-plug as follows:
- Press and hold the power button. The LED indicators light up yellow sequentially.
- Wait until the LED indicator flashes orange.
- Release the power button.
The Emergency-plug is switched off.
NOTICE
When the Emergency-plug is not turned off, it remains on until the batteries
are depleted.

You can order a protective cover for the Emergency-plug. Contact Total Safety
Solutions to order the protective cover.

Maintenance
User maintenance
Replacing the batteries
NOTICE
Do not use rechargeable or Lithium batteries in the Emergency-plug. The
battery life of the Emergency-plug cannot be guaranteed when using non-
recommended battery types.
The Emergency-plug batteries are depleted if the LED indicator flashes red or does not light up when the power button is pressed.
Replace the Emergency-plug batteries as follows:

Push the battery cover lock up and slide the battery cover backwards to remove the battery cover.

Remove the three AA batteries.
-
Insert three new AA batteries into the Emergency-plug.
When replacing the batteries for the first time, use the spare batteries supplied to prevent the spare batteries from draining. -
Replace the battery cover on the Emergency-plug.
NOTICE
Always ensure that the plus (+) and minus (-) markings on the battery match
the plus (+) and minus (-) markings in the Emergency-plug when inserting the
batteries.
Updating the software
Register the Emergency-plug to be kept informed of software updates.
After registration, you will be automatically informed of new software
updates. You can install software updates for the Emergency-plug as follows:
- Visit www.totalsafetysolutions.nl
- Go to ‘Warranty’.
- Follow the online instructions.
Cleaning
NOTICE
Do not use harsh chemical cleaning agents to clean the Emergency-plug. Always
use a soft, damp cloth to clean the Emergency-plug.
Clean the Emergency-plug after every use. Clean the Emergency-plug as follows:
- Clean the Emergency-plug housing with a soft, damp cloth.
- Dry the Emergency-plug housing with a soft, dry cloth.
- Clean the connections with a soft, dry cloth.
- Check the plug connections for sand and other dirt. If necessary, use an air compressor to blow the sand and other dirt out of the plug connections.
Supplier maintenance
It is recommended to have the Emergency-plug serviced annually.
During the annual service, the Emergency-plug is checked for defects and the
software is
updated to the latest version.
