PRODUCT CARE & MAINTENANCE

To remove your Shade Sail for winter storage Shade Sails are not designed to handle snow loads and must be taken down before the snow begins to fall to avoid damage. Ensure you have labeled the corners and their exact locations meaning which corner goes to which post. Your Sail is custom made to fit your configuration and must be re-flown the exact manner. If it is safe to do so, release the turnbuckles, until the sail falls and remove the “D” Shackles from the eye. Ensure the sail is clean and dry and fold neatly to store in a dry place. Please store away from any heat sources or sharp objects and rodents.

Tools Required

SHADE SAILS-CANADA-60-Min-Custom-Shade-Sail-6-Point-1Shade Sails should be installed with the hems facing down to the ground, for example you will be looking up at the sewn edge once the sail is flying. This is to allow for water to runoff.
Anchor point height variations are highly recommended. If you have ordered a custom sail we will have made the measurements to fit your space. You will notice the sail is smaller, this is normal and due to our software calculations based on the stretch of the fabric and the hardware included.

  1. Step # 1 Preparing your Shade Sail

    • Ensure you have the sail laid out with the corners clockwise as follows: the corners will be tagged A, B, C, D, E, or F depending on the number of anchor attachment points.

    • Ensure turnbuckles have Turnbuckle been fully extended and Loosen nuts away from body lubricated with the enclosed tube of lithium grease.

    • Loosen the nuts on the cable clamps to allow the cable to move freely through the sides of the sail.
NOTE: The cable should be sliding within the hem of the Shade Sail. Make sure the cable clamps are loose enough so this can happen (there should be enough cable in the sail so the ends don’t get lost in the sail). This will help you reach your anchor points.

  2. Step # 2 Attaching the Shade Sail

    • Attach the first corner to the anchor point, as per location of it’s corresponding tag. It’s best to start at a higher point.

    • Continue to attach the remaining corners in the same way as the first.
If the sail has more than three (3) sides, it is best to attach opposite corners first rather than moving around the perimeter.

    • Make sure the “D”Shackle pins are tight and secured to your anchor points! Use your Awl to tighten the pin.

    • The final corner will likely require a pulley system using rope to pull your turnbuckle towards your anchor eye.
A length of rope is included with your Shade Sail

    • NOTE: The location of nuts are away from the body. This will enable you to spin the turnbuckle body to tension the turnbuckle once your sail is attached. Be sure to orient yourself with the tightening of the turnbuckle by spinning the body.
Be sure NOT to spin the turnbuckle the wrong way as it will come apart.

  3. Step # 3 Tensioning cable in the edges
    SHADE SAILS-CANADA-60-Min-Custom-Shade-Sail-6-Point-5

    • Once you have connected the sail at every corner you should remove the slack from the cable (if there is any). Do this by pulling the ends of the cable to take up the slack, you will see the edge tighten. It is too much if the edge of the cloth starts to pucker or wrinkle.
    • Slide the cable clamp up to the thimble as tight as you can and ensure the nuts are oriented down, then secure the cable clamp in place and tighten the nuts on the cable clamp with a ratchet or wrench. Do not over tighten the nuts on the cable clamp’s as they may break.
    • Thread the excess cable ends back into the Shade Sail.
  4. Step # 4 Tensioning your Shade Sail

    • Tighten the turnbuckle’s with an awl until your sail has no wrinkles left in the fabric. This is accomplished by turning the body of the turnbuckle, so that the ends of the turnbuckle are being drawn together with each turn.
    • Be sure to tighten your Shade Sail very tight for optimum durability. Tighten until it is gets hard to turn your turnbuckle.
NOTE: Be sure you are tightening the turnbuckle and not loosening it. Spinning the turnbuckle body off the threads could result in having to detach corners and start over.
  5. Step # 5 Locking in your turnbuckle

    • After tensioning, tighten the nuts up against the body on each side of the turnbuckle. Give one final tighten of the turnbuckle body using your awl against the lock nuts.
