Mounting in Your Vehicle
Warning: Do not mount PASSPORT iQ where it impairs the driver’s view of the
road. Make sure that airbags are not obstructed by the device. Mounting
location Be sure to mount PASSPORT iQ level and high enough on your front
windshield to provide a clear view of the road ahead. In order for the GPS
features to work properly, the top case must have a clear view of the sky. For
optimum radar and laser sensitivity, center PASSPORT iQ between the driver and
passenger and ensure the back of the device faces forward. Mount PASSPORT iQ
away from windshield wipers, other solid objects, and heavily tinted areas
that might obstruct the radar antenna or laser lens. Mounting instructions
PASSPORT iQ’s EasyMount windshield bracket is designed for unobtrusive and
hassle-free mounting. To attach the EasyMount bracket to your windshield,
press the suction cup firmly onto the glass, then flip the locking clamp to
ensure the suction cup is adhered to the windshield securely. Be sure to keep
both your windshield and the suction cup clean. To attach PASSPORT iQ to the
EasyMount bracket, slide PASSPORT iQ downward so the EasyMount bracket locks
into the slot on the back of the device.
To adjust PASSPORT iQ on your windshield, move the adjustable EasyMount
bracket arm to your preferred view. You can leave the EasyMount bracket in
place on your windshield and easily remove PASSPORT iQ by pressing the

Map data information One of the goals of ESCORT is to provide customers with
the most complete and accurate cartography that is available to us at a
reasonable cost. We use a combination of governmental and private data
sources, which we identify in product literature and copyright messages
displayed to the consumer. Virtually all data sources contain some inaccurate
or incomplete data. In some countries, complete and accurate map information
is either not available or is prohibitively expensive.
Notice regarding windshield mounting legal restrictions State law in Minnesota
and California prohibits or restricts drivers from using suction mounts on
their windshields while operating motor vehicles (see California Vehicle Code
26708(a); Minnesota Statutes Section 169.71). Other ESCORT mount options
should be used when driving in those states. Many other states have enacted
restrictions against placing “non-transparent material” upon the windshield or
placing objects upon the windshield that obstruct the driver’s vision (e.g.,
New Jersey law currently prohibits windshield objects that “unduly interfere”
with the driver’s vision to the front or sides). Check your state and local
laws and ordinances where you drive before using the suction-cup mount on your
windshield. IT IS THE USER’S RESPONSIBILITIY TO USE THE PASSPORT iQ AND ESCORT
MOUNTING OPTIONS IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE USER IS IN COMPLIANCE WITH ALL
APPLICABLE LAWS AND ORDINANCES. Remember to always mount your PASSPORT iQ in a
location that does not obstruct the driver’s view of the road. ESCORT does not
assume any responsibility for any fines, penalties, or damages that may be
incurred as a result of disregarding this notice or as a result of any state
or local law or ordinance relating to the use of your PASSPORT iQ.

detection off:
Highway sensitivity–Provides maximum sensitivity on all bands. Auto
sensitivity–Provides real-time radar performance based on your vehicle speed.
As your vehicle speed increases, the radar sensitivity (X- and K-band) is set
to maximum range. As the vehicle speed decreases, the radar sensitivity (X-
and K-band only) is minimized to further
49
e
reduce unwanted false alarms. Full sensitivity is maintained on all other
bands. This mode is recommended for most driving.
Auto No X sensitivity–Provides the same detection sensitivity as Auto mode,
but with the X- band turned off.
OFF–This setting is particularly useful when you are driving in a state in
which radar detectors are illegal.
To set the sensitivity, touch Sensitivity on the Detector Settings screen.
Touch the mode to select it, then touch any button at the bottom of the screen
to exit and save your changes.
Activating/deactivating the AutoLearn feature The AutoLearn feature analyzes
(over time) the source of radar signals by location and frequency. This allows
PASSPORT iQ to determine if a signal is a real threat or a false one. If it
determines that the signal is an automatic door opener, motion sensor, etc.,
it automatically locks out this source at this particular location. A “stored”
message, accompanied by a single beep, will appear on the display when a
signal has been automatically locked out.
To turn AutoLearn on or off, touch AutoLearn on the Detector Settings screen.
Touch the mode to select it, then touch any button at the bottom of the screen
to exit and save your changes.
Note: AutoLearn typically needs to encounter the exact frequency in the same
location approximately three times to lock it out. Since some door openers are
turned on and off routinely, some variations may occur. When AutoLearn is on,
PASSPORT iQ will also un-learn signals to protect you from locking out real
threats. If a particular signal is no longer present at a location that was
previously locked out, PASSPORT iQ will unlock that signal.
Selecting the signal-strength display mode PASSPORT iQ has two settings for
displaying radar signal strength:
Standard Bar Graph–Provides information on a single radar signal. If there are
multiple signals present, PASSPORT iQ will determine which one is the most
important threat to display. In this mode, when radar is detected, PASSPORT iQ
displays the band (X, K, Ka, or Ku), and a precise bar graph of the signal
strength. When PASSPORT iQ detects a laser signal, the display will read
“Laser.” This is the default option for PASSPORT iQ. Note: The radar/laser
alert bar graph appears in red. If the signal has been locked out as false, it
will appear in gray.
e
50
SpecDisplay–This option is for the experienced detector user. In this mode,
PASSPORT iQ will display the actual numeric frequency of the radar signal
being received. For example, “K 24.150” shows one K-band signal at 24.150
gigahertz. Even long-time detector users will require some time to get
familiar with this new level of information about detected signals. Note: The
radar/laser alert frequency text appears in red. If the signal has been locked
out as false, it will appear in white.
To select your preferred signal-strength display mode, touch Meter on the
Detector Settings screen. Touch the mode to select it, then touch any button
at the bottom of the screen to exit and save your changes.
Modifying alerts within specified speeds (Cruise Alert) The Cruise Alert
feature allows you to modify audible alerts when traveling within specified
speeds (25 95 mph). To set, touch Cruise Alert on the Detector Settings
screen, then touch the option to select it. Touch any button at the bottom of
the screen to exit and save your changes. All alerts received while traveling
below the specified speed will give you a double-beep alert for that band.
Modifying band detection Selectable radar and laser bands allow you to
customize which bands are monitored. The factory setting for PASSPORT iQ is
all radar and laser frequencies (with the exception of Pop mode) monitored. It
is recommended that you keep PASSPORT iQ in this mode.
To monitor additional bands or modify your band detection in any way, touch
Bands On/Off on the Detector Settings screen. Touch the checkboxes next to the
bands to select/deselect them for monitoring, touching the up and down arrows
to scroll through the list. Touch Back or Menu to exit and save your changes.
For details on the various radar/laser bands, see “Understanding Your
Detector.”
51
e
Activating/deactivating the detector voice PASSPORT iQ is set to communicate
all radar/laser alerts and instructions using a voice announcement in addition
to alert tones. If you prefer to turn the voice announcements off, only tones
will be used for alerts. To turn the detector voice on or off, touch Voice
On/Off on the Detector Settings screen. Touch the mode to select it, then
touch any button at the bottom of the screen to exit and save your changes.
Activating/deactivating camera and speed-trap database PASSPORT iQ’s Defender
Database stores thousands of red-light and fixed-position speed cameras
throughout North America. The factory setting is for all markers in the
database to be reported as you approach them. It is recommended that you use
PASSPORT iQ in this mode.
To modify which markers are reported, touch Cameras, … on the Detector
Settings screen. Touch the checkboxes next to the various markers to
select/deselect them for reporting. Touch any button at the bottom of the
screen to exit and save your changes.
Activating/deactivating the GPS Radar/Laser Detector Filter (TrueLock)
PASSPORT iQ is equipped with a TrueLock GPS Radar/Laser Detector Filter to
lock out and store in its memory false alerts. For details on how to use this
feature, see “Locking out false alerts.”
To turn the TrueLock feature on or off, you must activate or deactivate the
TrueLock GPS Radar/Laser Detector Filter. To do so, touch Detector Filter on
the Detector Settings screen. Touch the mode to select it, then touch any
button at the bottom of the screen to exit and save your changes.
Clearing marked locations At some point, you may want to clear all of the data
in your detector database. This includes all marked locations. To do so, touch
Clear… on the Detector Settings screen, then touch Yes or No.
Activating/deactivating the illegal-state alert In some states, the use of a
radar detector is illegal. PASSPORT iQ is equipped to alert you when you enter
one of these states, so that you can turn your detector off.
To turn the illegal-state alert on or off, touch Illegal States on the
Detector Settings screen. Touch the mode to select it, then touch any button
at the bottom of the screen to exit and save your changes.
Activating/deactivating the detector AutoMute feature PASSPORT iQ comes
equipped with our patented AutoMute feature. After your detector alerts you to
a radar encounter at the volume you have selected, the AutoMute feature will
automatically reduce the alert volume to a lower level. This keeps you
informed without the annoyance of a continuous full- volume alert. If you
prefer, you can turn the AutoMute feature off.
To turn AutoMute on or off, touch AutoMute on the Detector Settings screen.
Touch the mode to select it, then touch any button at the bottom of the screen
to exit and save your changes.
Setting your alert tones When you encounter radar, a distinct audible alert
will sound and occur faster as the signal gets stronger. When the signal is
very strong, the audible alerts will blend into a solid tone. This allows you
to judge the distance from the signal source without taking your eyes from the
road.
52
e
Each band has a distinct tone for easy identification. PASSPORT iQ offers two
radar alert tone settings:
Classic–This is the factory setting for your PASSPORT iQ. It uses the standard
ESCORT radar alert tones:
· X-band = beep tone · K-band = raspy brap tone · Ka-band = double brap tone ·
Ku-band = beep tone (same as X-band) · Pop = solid brap tone · Laser = solid
brap tone
Note: Since Pop and laser signals are a possible threat no matter how weak,
PASSPORT iQ will provide a solid audio alert for these signals (Classic mode
only).
Mild–This setting offers softer, simpler alert tones, which are less obtrusive
to the driving experience:
· X-band, K-band, Ka-band, Ku-band, and Pop = Doorbell chime · Laser = Same as
Classic mode (solid brap tone)
To set the style of your alert tones, touch Alert Tones on the Detector
Settings screen. Touch Classic or Mild, then touch any button at the bottom of
the screen to exit and save your changes.
Activating/deactivating the laser shifters (optional feature) Our optional
SHIFTER ZR4TM laser-shifting system is the most advanced defense against
targeting laser guns. It includes three (two front, one rear) highly sensitive
laser transceivers that detect laser signals and transmit back a pulsed signal
to “shift” or confuse the targeting laser gun.
To avoid undue attention sometimes caused by laser guns providing “jamming”
codes to the officer, the SHIFTER ZR4 offers a Receive Only mode. In this
mode, simply touch the On-Screen Radar/Laser Alert Area or press the SmartCord
mute button to manually shut off the laser transceivers once you have
corrected your speed. The shifters remain in Receive Only mode for
approximately 60 seconds, giving you time to pass the speed trap. Once this
time has expired, the shifters return to active mode.
To turn this feature on or off, or to switch to Receive Only mode, touch Laser
Shifters on the Detector Settings screen. Touch the mode to select it, then
touch any button at the bottom of the screen to exit and save your changes.

SECTION 3:
UNDERSTANDING PASSPORT iQ
Understanding Your Detector
How radar works Traffic radar, which consists of microwaves, travels in
straight lines and is easily reflected by objects such as cars, trucks, even
guardrails and overpasses. Radar works by directing its microwave beam down
the road. As your vehicle travels into range, the microwave beam bounces off
your car, and the radar antenna looks for the reflections. Using the Doppler
principle, the radar equipment then calculates your speed by comparing the
frequency of the reflection of your car to the original frequency of the beam
sent out. Traffic radar has limitations, the most significant of these being
that it typically can monitor only one target at a time. If there is more than
one vehicle within range, it is up to the radar operator to decide which
target is producing the strongest reflection. Since the strength of the
reflection is affected by both the size of the vehicle and its proximity to
the antenna, it is difficult for the radar operator to determine if the signal
is from a sports car nearby or a semi truck several hundred feet away. Radar
range also depends on the power of the radar equipment itself. The strength of
the radar unit’s beam diminishes with distance. The farther the radar has to
travel, the less energy it has for speed detection. Because intrusion alarms
and motion sensors often operate on the same frequency as X- and K-band radar,
your detector will occasionally receive non-police radar signals. Since these
X-band transmitters are usually contained inside of a building or aimed toward
the ground, they will generally produce much weaker readings than will a true
radar encounter. As you become familiar with the sources of these pseudo
alarms in your daily driving, they will serve as confirmation that PASSPORT
iQ’s radar detection abilities are fully operational.
58
e
How Pop works Pop mode is a relatively new feature for radar gun
manufacturers. It works by transmitting an extremely short burst, within the
allocated band, to identify speeding vehicles in traffic. Once the target is
identified, or “popped,” the gun is then turned to its normal operating mode
to provide a vehicle tracking history (required by law).
Note: According to radar gun manufacturers, tickets should not be issued in
Pop mode.
How laser works Laser speed detection is actually Light Detection and Ranging
(LIDAR). LIDAR guns project a beam of invisible infrared light. The signal is
a series of very short infrared-light energy pulses that move in a straight
line, reflecting off your car and returning to the gun. LIDAR uses these light
pulses to measure the distance to a vehicle. Speed is then calculated by
measuring how quickly these pulses are reflected, given the known speed of
light.
LIDAR is a newer technology whose use is not as widespread as conventional
radar; therefore, you may not encounter it on a daily basis. And unlike radar
detection, LIDAR is not prone to false alarms. Because LIDAR transmits a much
narrower beam than does radar, it is much more accurate in its ability to
distinguish between targets and is also more difficult to detect. As a result,
even the briefest laser (LIDAR) alert should be taken seriously.
There are limitations to LIDAR equipment. LIDAR is much more sensitive to
weather conditions than radar, and a LIDAR gun’s range will be decreased by
anything affecting visibility, such as rain, fog, or smoke. A LIDAR gun cannot
operate through glass, and it must be stationary in order to get an accurate
reading. Because LIDAR must have a clear line of sight and is subject to
cosine error (an inaccuracy that increases as the angle between the gun and
the vehicle increases), police typically use LIDAR equipment parallel to the
road or from an overpass. LIDAR can be used day or night.
How threat-signal ranking works PASSPORT iQ includes a new boost in anti-
falsing software to eliminate excessive alerts from erroneous X- and K-band
sources. One example of this is traffic-flow monitoring systems. These
systems, which are becoming more widely used in cities across the U.S.,
generate K-band signals to measure the flow of traffic on a given road.
Unfortunately, most detectors see this as a real threat and will alert you to
it unnecessarily. Our new proprietary threat-signal ranking (TSR) software
intelligently sorts, ranks, and rejects these types of false alarms
automatically. The result is ultimate protection without excessive false
alarms.
We suggest you turn TSR on if you are experiencing extreme false alerts in
your area. For instructions on how to activate TSR, see “Modifying band
detection.”
How red-light cameras work Red-light cameras use three basic things: a camera,
a device to trigger the camera, and a computer.
An intersection may have more than one camera to monitor traffic from multiple
directions. The trigger is typically a series of wires buried just beneath the
surface of the road. These wires are separated by a
59
e
pre-set distance in order to create a magnetic field or induction loop. Once a
vehicle is in the intersection, the loop or circuit becomes closed and alerts
the computer to take a picture.
In some states, tickets are issued to the car’s owner, no matter who’s
actually driving. In this case, the red-light camera only needs to photograph
the vehicle’s rear license plate. In other states, the actual driver is
responsible for paying the ticket. In this case, the system needs a second
camera in front of the car to get a shot of the driver’s face.
How speed cameras work There are several types of fixed-position speed cameras
used, including radar, laser, induction-loop, and photo-based.
Radar-and laser-based cameras are typically mounted near the road and transmit
a short-range signal across the lanes monitored. Since this signal is
transmitted across the road instead of down the road like with many handheld
systems, detecting them in time is critical.
Another technology used is an induction-loop system. This type of system
utilizes wires buried just beneath the surface of the road to trigger a
computer that calculates speed between the two points.
Photo-based systems take two sets of pictures of all passing vehicles between
two separate fixed locations. Both sets of photographs are date and time
stamped, which enables the system to calculate average speed between the two
locations.
Fixed-speed cameras can also be set up to monitor one to four lanes of traffic
in the same direction. To achieve this, a sensor is installed in each lane,
and a wide-angle camera lens is used to photograph the vehicle that is
speeding.
Interpreting alerts Although PASSPORT iQ has a comprehensive warning system,
only experience will teach you what to expect from your detector and how to
interpret what it tells you. The specific type of radar being used, the type
of transmission (continuous or instant-on), and the location of the radar
source affect the alerts you receive.
The following examples will give you an introduction to understanding PASSPORT
iQ’s warning system for radar and laser alerts.
Note: This guide applies to alerts in Classic mode. For details on how to set
your alert tones, see “Setting Your Alert Tones.”
Alert: Detector begins to sound slowly, then the rate of alert increases until
it becomes a solid tone. The signal meter ramps accordingly. Explanation: You
are approaching a continuous radar source aimed in your direction.
Alert: Detector emits short alerts for a few seconds, then falls silent, only
to briefly alert and fall silent again.
60
e
Explanation: An instant-on radar source is being used ahead of you and out of
your view.
Alert: Detector suddenly sounds a continuous tone for the appropriate band
received. Explanation: An instant-on radar or laser source is being used
nearby. This kind of alert requires immediate attention.
Alert: Detector sends a brief laser alert. Explanation: Laser is being used in
the area. Because laser is inherently difficult to detect, any laser alert may
indicate a source very close by.
Alert: Detector receives weak signals. These signals may be a little stronger
as you pass large, roadside objects. The signals increase in frequency.
Explanation: A moving patrol car with continuous radar is overtaking you from
behind. Because these signals are reflected (reflections are increased by
large objects), they may or may not eventually melt into a solid point, even
when the patrol car is directly behind you.
Alert: Detector alerts slowly for a while, then abruptly jumps to a strong
alert. Explanation: You are approaching a radar unit concealed by a hill or an
obstructed curve.
Alert: Detector alerts intermittently. Rate and strength of alerts may be
consistent or vary wildly. Explanation: A patrol car is traveling in front of
you with a radar source aimed forward. Because signals are sometimes reflected
off of large objects and sometimes not, the alerts may seem inconsistent.
Alert: Detector alerts intermittently. Rate and strength of signal increases
with each alert. Explanation: A patrol car is approaching from the other
direction, sampling traffic with instant-on radar. Such alerts should be taken
seriously.
Alert: Detector gives an X-band alert intermittently. Explanation: You are
driving through an area populated with radar motion sensors (door openers,
burglar alarms, etc.). Since these transmitters are usually contained inside
buildings or aimed toward or away from you, they are typically not as strong
or lasting as a real radar encounter.
Caution: Overconfidence in an unfamiliar area can be dangerous. Likewise, if
an alert in a commonly traveled area is suddenly stronger or on a different
band than usual, speed radar may be set up nearby.
Understanding GPS The Global Positioning System (GPS) was developed by the
U.S. military and is made up of 24 orbiting satellites. There are at least
four satellites visible at any given time every day.
A GPS receiver is designed to locate and receive data from four of these
satellites. This data includes the distance to your location from each of the
satellites. Once the distance from each satellite is known, the receiver can
calculate and pinpoint your exact location.
