COVE DISHWASHER THEORY OF OPERATION

COVE DW2450 Dishwasher - DISHWASHER

WASH CYCLES

The Cove dishwasher has four wash cycles, Auto, Normal, Heavy, and Quick, available as keys on the dishwasher’s user interface module (UIM). Additional cycles for specific needs (for example, energy-saving cycles or gentle cycles for china and crystal) are available by touching the Cycles+ key.
Once the wash cycle is selected, additional options for the wash cycle (for example, delaying the start time or adding an anti-bacterial high-temperature rinse) are available by touching the Options key. To begin the wash cycle, touch the Start key and close the door.
In each wash cycle:

  1. The unit fills to a preset volume.
  2. The unit heats and circulates water throughout the tub interior with a preset water temperature and circulation speed.
  3. The unit may change which racks receive spray water/detergent. Each wash cycle has its own preset spray arm pattern.
  4. The unit does a preset number of fills and drains to remove the soils from the dishes.
  5. The unit rinses the dishes with a preset rinse sequence.
  6. The unit then dries the dishes with a preset drying sequence.

Each wash cycle has its own preset water volumes, temperatures, spray arm patterns, and rinse/drying operations.

STATUS LIGHT

The status light will illuminate to indicate the status of the cycle.

LIGHT STATUS
Blue A delayed start has been selected. Touch Start each time the door is

opened prior to the start time.
Red| The cycle has started.
Green| The cycle is complete.
No Light| The door was not closed within 4 seconds after touching Start, the cycle has been complete for more than two hours (low floor light setting) / eight hours (high floor light setting), or the door has been opened upon cycle completion.

WATER SOFTENER

For water softener models only, a salt compartment is located at the bottom of the interior.
When softener salt is low, “Add Salt. ENTER once added, CANCEL to ignore.” appears on the display.

DIVERTER VALVE

The diverter valve helps control water flow depending on the selected wash cycle.
The diverter valve manages water flow between the lower, middle, and upper wash arms. It uses a high-torque motor to drive a disc valve via a gear box. A proximity sensor sends information on the disc position to the MCM. The diverter valve distributes water from the wash pump to the upper/middle and lower spray arms at different pressures. In select cycles, it alternates flow between the arms to deliver a “soak and scrub” action.

  • When it diverts water to the upper/middle and lower arms separately, the unit also adjusts the wash pump RPMs to help maintain the pressure.
  • Quick and Rinse & Hold cycles do not divert water.
All other cycles use the diverter valve.

WATER INLET VALVE

When the water inlet valve (SOL1) is operated manually in Service mode, it will fill the unit with 1.0 gallons of water before automatically turning off.
The water inlet valve cannot fill the unit to the point that water overflows out of the unit. The water level is monitored by the pressure sensor. When the pressure sensor reaches a predetermined value, the MCM turns on the drain pump.

UIM AND TUB LIGHT BEHAVIOR

  • UIM lighting and tub lighting operation are synchronized.
  • When the UIM lighting turns on, the rate that the UIM lights increase their brightness matches the rate that the tub lights increase their brightness so that both lighting systems match.
  • When the door is closed, the tub lights instantly turn off.
  • When the door is opened, the tub lights slowly increase their brightness to 100% output level in 3 seconds.
  • If the door is left open at an angle for 10 minutes, the tub lights dim slowly to a 20% output level. Then, if the user leaves the door open at any angle for another 5 minutes, the tub lights turn off. If the door moves during this 15-minute period, the tub lighting dimming sequence starts over.

When Standby Power mode automatically turns on, all lighting dims as above.
Dishwasher lighting control does not affect or control lighting on the Sub- Zero Group Owner’s App.

TEMPERATURE AND TURBIDITY SENSOR

The temperature and turbidity sensor (AE1) is a combination sensor.

  • The temperature sensor portion is an integrated NTC thermistor. The temperature sensor will sense incoming water temperature as soon as the level of water in the sump rises to cover it.
  • The turbidity sensor uses infrared light to measure how dirty the water in the sump is. This helps to determine the rate of cleaning of the load.

The dishwasher’s UIM has no means to show temperature or turbidity. Monitoring either of these requires the Connected Diagnostics Program.

WASH CYCLES AND USER CONTROL

The dishwasher’s menu is arranged as a multi-level tree with pre-assigned UIM keys to navigate up/down and left/ right. It also has pre-assigned UIM keys to either select or disregard a value anywhere within the menu.

AUTO CYCLE

The Auto cycle uses the turbidity of the water and its change over time to decide the duration and intensity.
Auto starts with a prewash cycle, during which the unit drains and fills to 1.1 gal. The unit then washes and takes turbidity readings once per minute, calculating the average turbidity and the change in the average turbidity as time passes. The unit washes and accumulates turbidity data for 10 minutes (up to 15 minutes if the turbidity is not stable). Then, it selects a cycle based on the average turbidity:

  • Very Light (~2:07, 4 gal, crumbs, juice/wine/beer glasses very light loads).
  • Light (~2:30, 5.1 gal, cereal bowls, milk glasses, wine/beer glasses, mashed potatoes, meat juices).
  • Average (~2:55, 6.2 gal, tomato juice, fried eggs, cream corn, jams/jellies, tomato sauces).
  • Heavy (~3:25, 7.3 gal, oatmeal/hot cereals, scalloped potatoes, dried egg yolk, peanut butter, creamed corn).
  • Very Heavy (~3:55, 8.4 gal, dried/baked on starchy foods, dried on milk products, oven pans used for roasting meats, casserole foods).

NORMAL CYCLE

The Normal cycle uses the turbidity of the water and its change over time to decide the duration and intensity.
Normal starts with a pre-wash cycle, during which the unit drains and fills to 1.1 gal. The unit then washes and takes turbidity readings once per minute, calculating the average turbidity and the change in the average turbidity as time passes. If the turbidity is stable after about 13 minutes or if the unit has been washing for more than 20 minutes with varying turbidity behavior, the unit chooses the Light or Average setting based on the average turbidity level.
However, if the turbidity is consistently low (indicating dirty water) after the first fill/wash/drain, the unit chooses the Heavy setting.

  • Light (~2:40, 3.0-8.3 gal, cold cereal bowls, milk glasses, wine/beer glasses, meat juices)
  • Average (~2:40, ~5.0 gal, tomato juice, fried eggs, cream corn, jams/jellies, tomato sauces, starches)
  • Heavy (~2:40, 5.3-8.3 gal, oatmeal/hot cereals, scalloped potatoes, dried egg yolk, peanut butter, creamed corn)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Within the Heavy setting, the unit chooses one of two sets of fills and drains depending on the turbidity (five total fills and drains if the turbidity improves or eight total fills and drains if the turbidity remains low).

MODES

Modes are the dishwasher’s operational states, in which the dishwasher varies its behavior according to instructions from the following:

  • User input from the UIM
  • Connected appliance communications from a tablet or other connected device
  • Smart Grid
MODE DESCRIPTION
Power-Up mode The unit is first turned on.
User mode The unit is used for day-to-day, ordinary operation.
Standby Power mode The unit enters a low-power state after a specified period

of inactivity.
Sabbath mode| The unit is set up by the user for certain religious observances.
Child Lock mode| The unit’s UIM is locked to prevent unwanted operation.
Showroom mode| The unit is set up by sales staff for demonstration purposes.
Service Diagnostic mode| Activated by Service personnel in the user’s residence. See Service Mode.

POWER-UP MODE

POWER-UP MODE
Power-Up mode is the control system’s initial power-up/ boot sequence, when the unit first connects to AC power.
In Power-Up mode, all power supplies and all electronics initialize their associated circuitry and components.
Power-Up mode does not have water softener regeneration messaging, Bluetooth PIN messaging, diverter valve movement, or lighting.
Digital Wi-Fi connection X13’s ON/OFF state is OFF until after the boot sequence, when the software will set it to either OFF or ON.
If the unit does not successfully pass though Power-Up mode, the UIM shows “PF – Call Service.”

USER MODE

User mode is the normal, day-to-day operation mode of the dishwasher. This mode does not require any key press combinations to enter or exit, but the unit’s control system may enter and exit User mode automatically, for example entering Standby Power mode after a period of inactivity.
User mode allows all control system functions including Smart Grid requests, Bluetooth pairing, water softener regeneration messaging, diverter valve movement, pressure-based drain pump control, and the digital Wi-Fi connection X13.

STANDBY POWER MODE

During periods of inactivity, the unit can automatically enter a Standby Power mode in which it consumes no more than 0.5 W of power.
Standby Power mode occurs when the unit has either:

  • Had no door movement and no communication and has not logged any errors for 15 minutes.
  • Completed its wash cycle with the door still latched shut.

In Standby Power mode, the UIM is blank, and all control system outputs are disabled including tub lighting, water softener regeneration messaging, and diverter valve movement. Pressure-based drain pump control is allowed.
If the pressure goes above its range, the unit will exit Standby Power mode to communicate the error.
Standby Power mode is exited by moving the door, pressing any UIM key, receiving a Bluetooth pairing PIN display command, or triggering an error.
Standby Power mode never occurs when the unit’s “Connect?” option is turned on.

SABBATH MODE

Sabbath mode places the unit in a state of reduced operation specifically for the Sabbath. In Sabbath mode:

  • The system does not allow tub lighting, audible or visual response from the door, Smart Grid control, water softener regeneration messaging, diverter valve calibration/positioning, Bluetooth pairing PIN messaging, Service mode, or Standby Power mode.
  • If a leak is detected, the unit will use pressure-based drain pump control to try to control the leak. The unit will create error codes, but there will be no audible, visual, or Wi-Fi indication from the unit.
  • Control from a smartphone is allowed.

Sabbath mode can be entered at any time except during an active wash cycle, Showroom mode, Service mode, or Child Lock mode. Sabbath mode and Child Lock mode cannot both be on at the same time.
Sabbath mode remains active until it is deactivated.
Sabbath mode can be deactivated at any time.
A loss of power to the dishwasher does not change the status of Sabbath mode, but “Reset All” forces Sabbath mode to be exited.

ENTER SABBATH MODE

  1. Touch and hold Quick for 10 seconds or more.
“Sabbath On” appears on the UIM.

EXIT SABBATH MODE

  1. Touch and hold Quick for 10 seconds or more.
“Sabbath Off” appears on the UIM.

CHILD LOCK MODE

Child Lock mode allows the user to lock the control system to prevent tampering by children or other unauthorized individuals. In Child Lock mode:

  • The system monitors and controls the following components and devices: UIM lighting, keys, LCD, door accelerometer, audible indicator, door latch, and tub lights. Child Lock mode allows error detection/ management and pressure-based drain pump control.
  • The unit can enter Standby Power mode.
  • The unit can be monitored or controlled by the Sub- Zero Group Owner’s App. Entering and exiting Child Lock mode does not change the ON/OFF status of digital Wi-Fi connection X13.
  • Diverter valve movement (calibration or positioning) never occurs.
  • Bluetooth pairing/PIN messaging is not allowed.
  • DAL or TALR requests from a Smart Grid are not allowed.

Child Lock mode can be activated from either the UIM or from the Sub-Zero Group Owner’s App. Child Lock mode cannot be entered from Service mode.
Child Lock mode remains active until the user deactivates it. Child Lock mode does not use any sort of clock, calendar, or timer feature to automatically exit.
Cycling the power to the dishwasher (or a power outage) does not change the status of Child Lock mode, but “Reset All” does force-exit Child Lock mode.

ENTER CHILD LOCK MODE

  1. Touch and hold Heavy for 10 seconds or more.
“Child Lock: On” and “Locked” appear on the UIM.

EXIT CHILD LOCK MODE

  1. Touch and hold Heavy for 10 seconds or more.
“Child Lock: Off” appears on the UIM.

SHOWROOM MODE

Showroom mode is used to demonstrate the unit operation in an environment where no water supply or drain is available. In Showroom mode:

  • The entire UIM menu operates, and all wash cycles are simulated and accelerated.
  • Control from the Sub-Zero Group Owner’s App is allowed. The digital Wi-Fi connection X13 is unaffected by a change to Showroom mode, but Showroom mode must be exited before the state of X13 can be changed.
  • Standby Power mode is available.
  • Service mode and Child Lock mode are not available.
  • Pressure-based drain pump control, diverter valve movement, error checking, and Smart Grid requests are not allowed.

ENTER SHOWROOM MODE

  1. Touch and hold Options for 10 seconds or more to enter the User Setup menu.
  2. Use Options to scroll through the user setup options to Showroom Mode.
  3. Press Enter to set Showroom Mode to “On.” “Showroom Mode On” appears on the UIM.

EXIT SHOWROOM MODE

  1. Touch and hold Options for 10 seconds or more to enter the User Setup menu.
  2. Use Options to scroll through the user setup options to Showroom Mode.
  3. Touch Enter to set Showroom Mode to “Off.” “Showroom Mode Off” appears on the UIM.
