BEVCORP logo Gosling Seamer Roller Bearing Renewal Procedure

Purpose:

The purpose of this procedure is to renew the roller bearings if moisture has penetrated the bearing pack of the roller bearings resulting in corrosion.

Tools Needed:

  • Hex Wrench Set (standard)
  • Small Flat Head Screwdriver

Supplies Needed:

  • Mineral Spirits (paint aisle of hardware store)
  • Blue Scotch-brite pad (any light duty scouring pad) (paint aisle)
  • Red Scotch-brite pad (paint aisle)
  • PB Blaster (automotive aisle)
  • Carb/Parts Cleaner Spray
  • 2 soaking containers (big enough to fit each roller, but as small of diameter as possible such as round plastic take-out container).
  • Bar towels/Soft cloth rags
  • Nitrile/Latex Gloves
  • Seamer Grease (https://www.mcmaster.com/1445K41/)

Preliminary:

Each roller should be processed independently as to avoid mixing parts. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling chemicals.

Procedure:

  1. Remove the clear guarding at the exit side of the unit.

  2. Place one hand on the roller to hold it in place and using a fine tip flat head screwdriver or pointed probe, remove the retainer clip from the underside of the roller. NOTE: One side of the retainer clip has a cut-out for the tool to slip behind, see figure 1.

Clip

  3. Once the retainer clip is removed and set aside, use the flat head screwdriver or probe to pry the roller cap out of the roller. Be sure to hold the cap so it does not drop as it is removed.
NOTE: There is a recess on the side of the cap to assist in easy removal. See Figure 2.

Cap

  4. Using paper towels or rags, clean the grease from the cap. The cap does NOT need to be fully clear of grease or washed.

  5. Use a 3/16” hex wrench, remove the screw in the center of the roller, some grease may need to be removed with a cloth to be able to see the screw. This will release the roller and bearings from the threaded shaft and grant access to both top and bottom  roller bearings. NOTE: When the bearings are removed there may be shims (often one thick shim and many very thin shims, do not lose these).

  6. Remove as much grease as possible with rags.

  7. Prepare one of the two containers with enough mineral spirits to soak the parts then soak the bearings and roller for 10-30 seconds, remove the parts, wipe them with a rag to remove grease.
Repeat as necessary until the majority of the grease has been removed.

  8. Use the carb/parts cleaner spray out the remaining grease from the roller bearings.

  9. Prepare the second container with enough PB Blaster to cover the parts. Soak the bearings for a minute or two. Remove the bearings and scrub with the blue Scotch-brite pad, paying attention to getting each roller to move, returning to the PB Blaster bath  as needed. NOTE: If the lower bearing is not showing any corrosion then only perform this procedure with the upper bearing.

  10. Once the bearings are freely spinning, remove the PB Blaster from the bearings by soaking in the mineral spirits bath.

  11. Remove the residual mineral spirit/PB Blaster mixture by spraying the parts with thecarb/parts cleaner on a clean dry bar towel.

  12. Hand pack the bearings with grease, working the grease into the bearing, turning the bearings constantly, adding more grease as need until the bearing is full but not caked in grease.
Set the bearing aside when done on a clean dry bar towel. Perform this for each bearing.

  13. Using the red Scotch-brite pad, clean off any corrosion from the inside of the roller and the stainless top cap. Use the mineral spirits if needed to wipe lingering corrosion away.

  14. Reassemble the roller, making sure all the shims go in-between the two bearings. Reinstall the keyed washer, screw, and top cap onto the threaded shaft making sure all keyed parts are lined up before fully tightening.

  15. Reinstall the bottom cap and retainer clip. NOTE: If the retainer clip is having trouble seating, the keyed parts are likely not aligned properly.

  16. Apply a grease plug to the keyed opening where the threaded shaft meets the top cap (see figure 3).
