- Although breast cancer is much more common in women, it can also occur in men—and it can be just as deadly. Men have a small amount of breast tissue located under the nipple and the areola (the dark area around the nipple). Because men have much less breast tissue than women, they can more easily recognize any lumps. However, breast cancer in men can spread more quickly to other parts of the body and become life threatening.
- Although many breast lumps are not cancerous, any lump should be examined by a healthcare professional as soon as possible. Men 40 and older should be examined for breast lumps by a healthcare professional each year during regular checkups. If treatment is started at an early stage, the chance for survival is excellent.
- Men may also wish to examine the nipple area regularly for lumps or any other warning signs of cancer. For instructional purposes, the Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Model has two lumps that simulate the feel of breast lumps in men.
Care Instructions
This model is made of BIOLIKE 2™ synthetic tissue and should be handled carefully. Treat the model as carefully as human tissue. To ensure maximum life of the model, follow these instructions. Before each use, lightly powder the model with talcum powder to give it a smooth feel. When needed, clean the model with mild soap and warm water, but avoid soaking the model in water. Pat the model dry with a clean cloth and re-powder it. Do not attempt to remove the skin model from the plastic base. It is permanently affixed. Do not allow the model to come into contact with ink or printed materials. Do not puncture the model with fingernails or other sharp objects. Keep the model stored in its protective case when not in use. Avoid exposure to heat and direct sunlight.
