Product Information

The product is called USBy and is a device that can be connected to a router/modem and registered on the ControlloCasa website. The product comes with a user manual in four languages: Italian, English, German, and French. The current version of the manual is 5.1, and it has 64 pages.

Product Usage Instructions

To install USBy, follow these steps:

  1. Connect USBy to the Router/Modem.
  2. Register USBy on the ControlloCasa website.

To install USBy, follow these steps:

  1. Connect USBy to the Router/Modem.
  2. Register USBy on the ControlloCasa website.
  3. USBy-Installation (German)

To install USBy, follow these steps:

  1. Connect USBy to the Router/Modem.
  2. Register USBy on the ControlloCasa website.

Installation de USBy (French)

To install USBy, follow these steps:

  1. Connect USBy to the Router/Modem.
  2. Register USBy on the ControlloCasa website.
  3. Modify the email address and device identification (alias) if needed.

Note:

If you encounter any issues during the installation or usage of USBy, refer to the Troubleshooting section of the manual or contact the ControlloCasa support team.

USER MANUAL

CONDITIONS OF USE: the USBy device bases its operation on the Internet connection. Therefore we recommend that you power the USBy device to the USB port of your Router or to an electrical outlet near the Router (1-3m). This will ensure the best conditions for using the device. If these conditions are not respected, the service provided by the device may not be guaranteed.

IMPORTANT : Starting from the new USBy v5 version, the blue LED inside the device remains off.
The blue LED inside the device turns on only to signal the loss of connection with the ControlloCasa server.

Please, follow the instructions below to correctly install USBy.

USBy Installation
In order to use USBY we need to perform 2 operations:

  • Connect USBy to the Router/ Modem to be able to access the Internet
  • Register USBy on the ControlloCasa site to receive alerts

Connect USBy to the Router / Modem

  1. Turn on USBy by preferably connecting it to the USB port of your Router/Modem or to the electrical outlet using an adapter (e.g. adapter used to charge mobile phones) near the Router / Modem (ca. 1-3m)

  2. From your PC/Mac open the list of WiFi networks and select the network created by USBy (e.g. USBy-V4_XXXXXX)
    It is normal for the WiFi networks icon to show that there is no Internet access (sometimes highlighted with the “!” symbol). In fact, you are currently connected to the local network created by USBy which cannot access the Internet.
    If the network created by USBy is not displayed in the list of WiFi networks, deactivate and reactivate WiFi on your PC/Mac. Then, wait a few seconds and repeat the search for the network created by USBy.

  3. Open your web browser and enter the following address : 192.168.4.1 At this point the following graphic interface will be displayed.ControlloCasa Power Failure Alarm Power Cut Alarm Power Outage Alarm Blackout-fig1
    After selecting the English language, the search for the main WiFi networks available will start.

After about 6 seconds, the following graphical interface will be displayed listing all the main available WiFi networks that have been detected

NOTE : The WiFi network name (SSID) must not contain the character ‘
Select your Wifi network and press the GO button
At this point the following interface will be displayed

Enter the Password in the respective field and press the ACTIVATE button.
If the USBy configuration requires an alignment of the communication channel with your Router / Modem, the following information window will be displayed.

In this case, close the information window
Make sure you are connected to the network created by USBy otherwise reconnect to it Press the ACTIVATE button
Once the communication channel between the USBy device and your Modem/Router has been successfully activated, the following interface will be displayed

In the event of an error or connection problems between the USBy device and your Router / Modem, select the HELP option in the menu or consult the following link:

If the problem persists, take note of the reported error codes and send them by email to the following address: assistenza@controllocasa.it
If the connection of the USBy device to your Router is successful, the following interface will be displayed2

If you see the following interface, the USBy device connection to your Router is successful but the USBy device is too far from your Router. We advise you to bring the USBy device closer to your Router (1-3m).

2 IMPORTANT: For security reasons, at the end of the configuration procedure, the network created by USBy is disabled. The USBy network will be available for about 60sec after each switching on of the device, after which it will be disabled again.

Register USBy
At this point, after pressing the REGISTER button (to enable the reception of the current lack / restore notifications) you will see the following interface

Use the fields as indicated and accept the contractual conditions and the processing of personal data
At this point our Operations Center will send an email to the address you just registered informing you of the activation of your USBy and also reporting its ID.
TEST : To verify the correct operation of USBy, disconnect the power supply to USBy and after about 5 minutes you should receive an email informing you of the power failure. Once you have powered up the USBy again, you should receive the power restoration notice after about 1 minute.
NOTE: If the power outage lasts less than 5 minutes, you will receive a single “Short Outage” alert when power is restored.

USBy Functionalities & Services
This section provides you with the information you need to:

  • Retrieve USBy ID
  • Change the email address or the device name (alias)
  • Check USBy’s connection status
  • Check the ambient temperature
  • Update the Software
  • Additional services (for a fee)

Retrieve USBy ID
If USBy has not yet been registered, the USBy ID is shown in the screen at the top right during the installation phase.
If USBy has already been registered, the USBy identification can be retrieved by accessing your user page on the site www.controllocasa.it

Change the email address or the device name (alias)
The procedure to follow to change the email address where to receive the lack / restore notifications or the device name (alias) is as follows:

  1. Open your Web Browser and enter the following URL: www.controllocasa.it
  2. In the Main Menu, select the “Login”

    At this point, you can change the name (Alias) of your device and the email address where to receive the alerts.
    If you modify the configuration, please remember to “Save” the new configuration
    After saving the new configuration, remember to use the new email address to access the ControlloCasa website later

The field relating to the Telephone Number for receiving alerts cannot be edited by the user and will contain your telephone / mobile number only after activation of the Call-Me service (see section 2.2.6)

Check the Connection Status of USBy
The procedure to follow to check the status of the device is as follows:

  1. Open your Web Browser and enter the following URL: www.controllocasa.it
  2. In the Main Menu, select the “Login”

If the quality of the WiFi connection is not optimal, it is advisable to bring USBy close to the Modem / Router and check the status again after a minute of waiting.

Check the ambient temperature
The procedure to follow to check the ambient temperature reported by USBy is as follows:

  1. Open your Web Browser and enter the following URL: www.controllocasa.it
  2.  In the Main Menu, select the “Login”

    At this point, after selecting “Temperature” you will see the following graphic interface of the environment where your USBy device resides (see graph below)

Software update

Our customers will be notified via email when a software update is made available.
In this case, the email you will receive will contain the procedure to download and install the new software version.
To update the USBy software, Windows Operating System shall be used!

Additional Services (for a fee)

Call-Me Service: In addition to the email, a telephone call service from our Operations Center can be activated in case of power failure alarm. Further information is available on the website: www.controllocasa.it

Temp-Alarm Service: Optionally, an email alert service can be activated when one of the temperature levels (min/max) exceeds the configured intervals.

Troubleshooting

  • Where can I find the USBy user manual
    You can find the user manual at the following link:

  • How to recognize the version of the device
    1. Open the list of WiFi networks
    2 The device version is shown in the name of the wifi network created (e.g. USBy-vX_123456)

  • What to do to recover the USBy ID
    The USBy ID is returned at the end of the procedure “Connect USBy to the Router / Modem” in the User Manual

  • What to do if the installation procedure was successful but I do not receive the warnings
    Verify that the alerts have not been moved to the Junk or Spam folders

  • What to do if I get a lot of power / internet failure alerts
    Connect the USBy device closest to your Router / Modem (approx 1-3m) or to the USB port of your Router / Modem

  • What to do if the Router is replaced
    Repeat the only procedure of “Connect USBy to the Router / Modem” without having to repeat the procedure of “Register USBy”

  • What to do if your WiFi network password is changed
    Repeat the only procedure of “Connect USBy to the Router / Modem” without having to repeat the procedure of ” Register USBy”

  • What to do if I need to change the password

  • Why after connecting to the USBy network does the WiFi networks icon show that there is no Internet access (sometimes with the “!” Symbol)?
    After connecting to the network created by USBy, it is normal for the WiFi networks icon to show that there is no Internet access (sometimes with the “!” Symbol). In fact, you are currently connected to the local network created by USBy which, not yet connected with your Router / Modem, does not allow access to the Internet.

  • What to do if during the authentication phase on the website www.controllocasa.it using an iPhone with version 12.x or higher the error message “User does not exist” is displayed
    In the event that, during the authentication phase on the website www.controllocasa.it using an iPhone with version 12.x or higher, the error message “User does not exist” is displayed, you must:
    1. Select the Settings application on your iPhone => Safari => Advanced => Experimental Feature and disable the “Swap Processes on Cross-Site Navigation”
    2. Retry to access the website www.controllocasa.it using Safari

  • What to do if the USBy device has WiFi connection problems with your Router / Modem

    • Turn off USBy for about 10 seconds
    • Turn off your Router / Modem
    • Turn on USBy by connecting it to the mains using a special adapter (eg adapters used to recharge mobile phones) near the Router / Modem (approx. 1-3m) or to the USB port of your Router / Modem
    • Open the list of WiFi networks and select the network created by USBy (eg USBy- V4_XXXXXX)
    •  Open your Web Browser and enter the following URL 192.168.4.1/reset.html
    • At this point you will need to:
    • Disconnect the USBy device from the power outlet
    • Turn on your Router / Modem
    • Connect the USBy device to the power outlet
    • Repeat the procedure for Connect USBy to the Router / Modem as described in paragraph
