The Propper VAPOR LINE® PCD Challenge Test
for use in STEAM pre-vacuum sterilizers at 273°F (134°C)
Instructions For Use
-
Grasp the metal body of the PCD with one hand and, with the other hand, rotate the screw cap in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the cap from the metal body. Notice that the sample holder is affixed to the underside of the screw cap.
-
Place a VAPOR LINE integrator into the slot in the sample holder.
Note: The raised portion of the integrator must be positioned in the round opening of the sample holder slot. Insert the sample holder into the body of the PCD and secure the screw cap using a clockwise rotation. -
Place the PCD with the load in the sterilizer chamber. The PCD should be in the horizontal position on the lower rack over the drain. Make sure that the open end of the plastic tubing is not blocked. Secure the sterilizer door and run the normal sterilization cycle.
-
At the end of the cycle, remove the PCD from the sterilizer using heat-resistant gloves. Unscrew the cap from the metal body and retrieve the VAPOR LINE integrator from the sample holder.
-
Examine the window of the integrator to determine the position of the black color bar. If any portion of the black color bar reached the green “PASS” area, this is your assurance that the conditions necessary for sterilization have been met. If the black color bar only reached the red “FAIL” area or is not visible at all, this is your indication that sterilizing conditions have not been met. The entire load must be re-wrapped and re-sterilized according to standard hospital procedures for reprocessing sterilizer loads.
-
When preparing the PCD for the sterilization cycle place a new VAPOR LINE integrator in the sample holder and proceed as directed in steps 2 through 5 above.
Note: In laboratory tests, VAPOR LINE PCD units have been subjected to 200 successive steam sterilization cycles 273°F / 134°C without device failure.
Care and Handling: Do not use the coiled plastic tubing to lift or transport the PCD. Always hold the PCD by the metal capsule. Do not crimp, twist or fold the plastic tubing. Inspect the open end of the plastic tubing before each cycle to be sure it is not plugged.* Inspect the inside of the metal capsule before each cycle to be sure it is free from debris. When not in use, store the PCD in the protective case provided.
- Should the plastic tubing become plugged, it may be possible to dislodge the plug material by supplying a stream of clean air through the metal capsule into the tubing. If this cannot be done, follow the instructions below for repairs.
