Be thorough when measuring
It’s not hard to measure the room where you plan to install your kitchen, but
it’s important that you get it right. Your accurate measurements will be the
basis for all your planning.
Give yourself plenty of time to measure precisely. Make sure to include
fractions of an inch to ensure your new kitchen correctly fits your space.
Here’s how you do it.
Measuring your room
1 Have proper tools handy — pen, paper and measuring tools.| 2 Draw your room
layout on a sheet of paper. We recommend having one piece of paper for each
wall.| 3 Measure the floor to ceiling, marking the highest and lowest points.
Remember to include soffits.
4 Measure each wall fully from floor to ceiling and from doors to windows.
Remember to include door and window frames.| 5 Note anything that extends into
the room (radiators, exhaust vents, window sills).| 6 Measure ventilation
outlet for kitchen exhaust hood.
7 Note all water supply and drain pipes, as well as their new location if you plan to move them.| 8 Mark existing power outlets, switches, and gas lines, as well as their new locations if you plan to move them.
Measuring your countertop
It is important to get the measurements for your countertop right, especially if you plan to order a custom-made one.
1 Have proper tools handy. Carpenters rule/ tape measure, pencil and angle
square.| 2 Measure your countertop starting from one corner to the opposite
end. Make sure that all length and depth measurements are taken from at least
two places. Don’t forget to add 1½” to account for overhang.| 3 It’s
important to indicate the location of the sink. Measure from the corner of
the countertop to the center of the base cabinet where your sink is located.
4 It’s also important to indicate the location of the cooktop. Measure from
the corner to the center of your cooktop. Notice where the seams are and keep
this in mind.| 5 Make note of the thickness of your countertop.| 6 Don’t
forget to take measurements of your island countertop, as well as the
location of a sink or cooking surface.
