Be thorough when measuring

It’s not hard to measure the room where you plan to install your kitchen, but it’s important that you get it right. Your accurate measurements will be the basis for all your planning.
Give yourself plenty of time to measure precisely. Make sure to include fractions of an inch to ensure your new kitchen correctly fits your space. Here’s how you do it.

Measuring your room

1 Have proper tools handy — pen, paper and measuring tools.| 2 Draw your room layout on a sheet of paper. We recommend having one piece of paper for each wall.| 3 Measure the floor to ceiling, marking the highest and lowest points. Remember to include soffits.

4 Measure each wall fully from floor to ceiling and from doors to windows. Remember to include door and window frames.| 5 Note anything that extends into the room (radiators, exhaust vents, window sills).| 6 Measure ventilation outlet for kitchen exhaust hood.

7 Note all water supply and drain pipes, as well as their new location  if you plan to move them.| 8 Mark existing power outlets, switches, and gas lines, as well as their  new locations if you plan to move them.

Measuring your countertop

It is important to get the measurements for your countertop right, especially if you plan to order a custom-made one.

1 Have proper tools handy. Carpenters rule/ tape measure, pencil and angle square.| 2 Measure your countertop starting from one corner to the opposite end. Make sure that all length and  depth measurements are taken from at least two  places. Don’t forget to add 1½” to account for overhang.| 3 It’s important to indicate the location of the sink.  Measure from the corner of the countertop to the  center of the base cabinet where your sink is located.

4 It’s also important to indicate the location of the  cooktop. Measure from the corner to the center of  your cooktop. Notice where the seams are and keep this in mind.| 5 Make note of the thickness of your countertop.| 6 Don’t forget to take measurements of your island  countertop, as well as the location of a sink or cooking surface.
