Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of the Vivitar VIV-SF-3000 flash unit. This flash can be used for both direct hot shoe photography (when switched to Normal mode) and remote flash photography (when switched to “Slave On”). This flash also features four slave modes that allow it to work with cameras that fire their built-in flash instantaneously or cameras that have a single or multiple flash red-eye reduction system. Please check your camera’s instruction manual to determine which flash system your camera has.

Attaching the Bracket and Mounting the Slave Flash

First place the camera in one hand and the slave flash in the other. Turn the camera upside down so the tripod socket is showing adjusting to the width of your particular camera. Once in place, slip the flash into the shoe of the mounting bracket. Make sure to align the flash parallel to the direcion of your camera.

Remote Flash Photography (for cameras that do not have II built-in hot shoe)
To begin, place the Mode Select Switch in the Slave On position. Then place the Slave Mode Switch to one of the S 1, S2, S3, or S4 positions to match your camera’s flash system. The definition of each mode is listed below:

  • 51: Instant synchronization. This device fires after it sense the first flash fired from the camera. 52: This device fires after it senses the second flash fired from the camera.
  • 53: This device fires after it senses the third flash fired from the camera.
  • S4: This device fires after it senses the fourth flash fired from the camera.

After the Ready Light glows the device is ready to use. You should now switch the flash of your camera to “On”. Point your camera towards the subject you are photographing and take a picture after both flashes indicate they are ready for operation. The ready lights on both flashes should be glowing in order to begin. The Digital Slave Flash will automatically fire each time the camera’s flash fires. By pressing the “Test” button while the Flash ready light is on you can fire a test flash. This is to ensure you that the flash is charged and ready to fire.

This will allow you to get shaded areas lighted from different angles or as a fill I flash when shooting into dark areas.

Directions Hot Shoe Photography

You may use this unit directly mounted to the hot shoe of your camera. Place the Mode select switch to the “Normal” position and wait for the “Ready” light to glow.
