How to Use

This appliance is for household use only.

GETTING STARTED

  • Remove all packing material and any stickers from the product.
  • Please go to www.prodprotect.com/blackanddecker to register your warranty.
  • Wipe the appliance with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

Important
The blades are sharp; be very careful as you wipe all parts with a damp cloth or sponge. Do not put any parts in the dishwasher.

Note
For your protection, this unit has a lid interlock system. Do not attempt to operate unless the lid is securely in place.

GRINDING

  1. Remove the lid and place up to 2/3 cup (maximum) (approximately 155 ml) of coffee beans into the grinding bowl.

  2. Place the lid securely on the grinding bowl. Plug in the grinder. Press the pulse control for a few seconds and release (A). Be careful not to over process. Refer to the GRINDING GUIDELINES in this section.
Note: Never operate the grinder for more than 30 seconds at a time.

  3. A coarse grind works well for slower brewing in a percolator; a medium grind will get the best flavor extraction for faster brewing in automatic drip coffeemakers and a fine grind is great for espresso or Turkish coffee. Experiment with the texture of your grind to see what works best with your coffeemaker. For the freshest coffee, use only fresh beans for the amount you will brew.

GRINDING GUIDELINES

For 2/3 cup (155 ml) of coffee beans

  • Coarse 10 to 12 seconds for Perculator or French Press
  • Medium 14 to 16 seconds for Auto Drip
  • Fine: 24 to 28 seconds for Espresso or Turkish

Be sure the blades have stopped spinning completely before removing the lid. Unplug the grinder, remove the lid, then place desired amount of ground coffee directly into a paper or permanent filter in your filter basket or into a storage container. We recommend 1tablespoon (15 ml) of ground coffee per cup (5 oz each) (147 ml each) of coffee you wish to brew. Whole coffee beans should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month or the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to use, beans can be ground while still frozen. Extra ground coffee can be stored in an airtight container to retain flavor.

GRINDING NUTS OR SPICES

  1. Freshly ground nuts such as almonds, or hazelnuts have a distinct flavor so be sure to clean and wipe out the grinding bowl after using it to chop these nuts (see CARE AND CLEANING) unless you want your coffee to have a slight “nutty” flavor. Use short bursts for a coarse grind when processing nuts.
  2. This grinder can only handle dry, brittle foods. It will not grind anything moist, extremely hard or gummy such as whole ginger, chocolate, sesame seeds or oily spices such as cinnamon, cloves or nutmeg. Do not grind peanuts or grains such as wheat, rice, barley or dried corn. Attempting to grind any of these foods may damage the unit.
  3. Freshly ground peppercorns or spices have a strong aroma and taste that may affect the flavor of coffee beans ground afterward. You may want to purchase a separate grinder if you plan to grind peppercorns, herbs or spices.

Care and Cleaning

This product contains no user-serviceable parts. Refer service to qualified service personnel.
CLEANING

  1. Always unplug the unit before cleaning. Wash the lid with warm water and dish soap – not in a dishwasher. Wipe the grinding bowl, base and other parts with a slightly damp cloth or sponge. Take special care around the blades; they are sharp! Dry parts thoroughly. Do not immerse grinding bowl, base or plug in liquid or under running water.
  2. Never use harsh detergents or abrasive cleansers or scouring pads to clean any part.
  3. To remove residue or aromas left behind by nuts, grind one tablespoon of baking soda in the bowl then wipe thoroughly.
  4. Use the built-in cord wrap on the underside of the unit to store the cord.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this coffee grinder have a timer?

No, it does not have a timer.

Does the grinder come with a warranty?

Yes, it comes with a one year limited warranty.

Is it easy to clean?

Yes, it is very easy to clean. You can disassemble the parts and wash them in the dishwasher.

How loud is this coffee grinder?

This coffee grinder is not very loud at all. It has a low noise level of around 70 decibels.

How many beans per cup?

4 cups of brewed coffee may typically be made from one scoop of ground coffee. Every day, I brew a pot. Add two loads of beans to the grinder. It’ll last for two or three days. Anything beyond what was planned.

The grinding bowl may it be taken out?

No removal of the Black & Decker container from the device is possible. The electrical cord also kept slipping out at the bottom. I bought the Hamilton Beach version. That’s fantastic. The grinding container can be removed for cleaning and coffee transfer. We also purchased a mini-food processor and an additional tub so we could ground spices.

Can I wash it after usage with water and soap?

I simply use a warm, moist cloth to clean it. If you use soap, there’s a chance your coffee could taste soapy. At least, that’s how I’ve always been told to clean the components of coffee pots.

Burr grind: What does that mean?

A burr mill, also known as a burr grinder, is a mill that uses two rotating abrasive surfaces that are spaced apart by a distance that is often controlled by the operator in order to grind hard, small food items.

Do I need to clean the machine after every use?

When you switch coffee flavours, clean instead.

You need a grind with a talcum-powder-like consistency if you plan to reuse a K cup. Will this work?

Yes, the grinds get finer the longer you grind it. As well, I own a Keurig.

Can 12 ounces be ground? In the past

Small quantities are best for proper, even grinding. less chaos and more consistent grinding.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the Prop 65 cancer/reproductive damage warning on this product?

This is only for citizens of California. For California-related goods, it is almost everywhere. It has to do with the plastic that is currently being used and contains anything that has previously been connected to cancer.

Can the bowl be taken apart and cleaned?

No, however it is a tiny bowl that is very simple to clean.
