Other Equipment
Stable Placement. Do not place the ZVOX system on an unstable cart,
stand, bracket or table. The ZVOX system may fall, causing serious injury to a
child or adult and serious damage to the product. Do not use the ZVOX system
on any unstable surface. The soundbar has two keyhole- shaped mounting
locations on the back panel. These mounting sites will securely hold a
screwhead that is no larger than 3/8” (10mm) in diameter. It is the
installer’s responsibility to confirm each mounting site used to support the
the soundbar has an adequate weighthandling margin to support both the weight
of the soundbar and extra weight that may inadvertently be applied as a result
of a house-hold accident. Damage that may occur to the soundbar during or
after the mounting process or any other installation activity is NOT covered
under the terms of the ZVOX Audio limited warranty.
ZVOX Soundbar Dimensions
Guide to the Audio Signal Cables included with your ZVOX Soundbar
The soundbar includes two analog signal cables and one optical digital signal
cable. It is likely one of these three cables can connect from your TV or
cable/satellite set top box to the soundbar’s digital or analog input.
In the rare instance your TV or cable/sat set top box has only an optical
minijack audio output, an optical miniplug to standard optical plug cable is
needed (not supplied with the ZVOX soundbar).
Quick Setup Guide
The quick guide assumes an optical digital audio connection from your TV to
the ZVOX speaker.
The ZVOX Soundbar Model SB500/SB700 is often referred to as the “ZVOX
speaker”, “Soundbar” or “SB500/SB700” in this User Manual.
-
Place The ZVOX Speaker
You can place the ZVOX speaker anywhere in front of your TV. It can also be placed on any level surface near the TV – above, below or to the left or right. It doesn’t have to be centered in front of the TV. The ZVOX speaker performs best if it faces the people watching the TV.
The connections to the SB500/SB700 input panel are not affected by your choice of placement.
NOTE: The SB500/SB700 also has two keyholestyle slots on the back panel. With the additional owner-supplied hardware, these two attachment points allow “on wall” placement or secure at- tachment to a flat surface.
Refer to page 6 for help in choosing between the three placement options, Face Front, Face Up or Wall Mount. -
Connect The Power Cord To The ZVOX speaker
Connect the power cord to the power jack on the back of the ZVOX speaker.
Then connect the AC plug into an AC power receptacle. Don’t turn the ZVOX speaker on just yet. The speaker will automatically turn on when power is applied. -
Connect The Optical Signal Cable
Most TVs have an optical digital output jack (sometimes called (“TOSLINK”) on the back. Connect one end of the supplied optical cable to this optical jack. Connect the other end of the optical cable to the optical jack inside the soundbar’s input panel.
NOTES: If a protective plastic cover is attached to the end of the cable, please remove it before trying to insert the cable into the toslink connector on your TV.
The optical plug and jack are not square. Position the optical plug so it matches the orientation of the optical jack, then push the plug into the jack. You should hear and feel a “click” when the plug is correctly inserted into the optical jack.
If your TV does not have an optical connector, you can also connect the ZVOX speaker using an analog signal cable (also supplied). See instructions later in this manual. -
Turn down your TV’s sound and turn on the ZVOX Speaker
Tune your TV to a program. Then use the TV remote to lower the sound coming from your TV until it is inaudible.
Using the ZVOX speaker remote control, press the POWER button to turn on the ZVOX speaker. You should be able to hear the TV sound from the ZVOX speaker. Use the volume buttons on the ZVOX speaker’s remote control to set the volume to your preferred level. You are done!
If you don’t hear sound, press the INPUT button on the soundbar until you see “InId” appear on the face of the soundbar. This indicates the optical digital input has been selected.
Note: Your TV will likely have a setting that allows you to shut off the internal speakers. Consult your TV’s owners manual to utilize this feature.
Alternative Ways To Connect The ZVOX Soundbar
If your TV doesn’t have an optical output, here are some other options:
Minijack Analog Audio Out
Many TVs have an audio output minijack (sometimes labeled “3.5mm”) or
headphone jack. Use the supplied “analog miniplug to left and right RCA plugs”
cable for this connection. Insert the minplug end of the cable into the TV’s
audio out minijack. Insert the red and white RCA plugs at the other end of the
cable into the soundbar’s red and white RCA jacks labeled “ANALOG INPUT”.
Once you have connected the cable to the ZVOX speaker, follow step 4 on page 3
of this manual. After you have turned on the ZVOX speaker, press the INPUT
button on the ZVOX speaker remote control until you see “In3A”appear. This is
the red/white RCA jacks input.
Volume Adjustment Note: A headphone jack’s output always responds to the
TV’s remote control. Use your TV’s remote control to set the TV volume
indication to about 40% or higher. If the Soundbar volume needs to be higher
than level 15 to produce desired results, turn up the TV volume. Then use the
ZVOX remote control to adjust the volume level. Do not use your TV remote to
adjust volume.
Red and White RCA Jack Analog Audio Out
Some TVs use red/white RCA jacks for the analog audio output. Be sure to
locate red and white jacks on the TV marked “OUTPUT” (not “INPUT”). Next,
identify the supplied analog cable with red and white RCA plugs at each end
(see page 3 for guidance).
Make The Connection
Insert the red and white plugs at one end of the cable into the red and white
RCA jacks on the TV labeled “OUT”. Insert the red and white RCA plugs at the
other end of the cable into the soundbars’s red and white RCA jacks labeled
“ANALOG INPUT”.
Once you have connected the analog signal cable to the ZVOX speaker, follow
step 4 on page 3. After you have turned on the ZVOX speaker, press the INPUT
button on the ZVOX speaker remote control until you see “In3A”appear. This is
the red/white RCA jacks input.
See Volume Adjustment Note at the end of the first column.
Connect To Your Cable Or Satellite TV Set Top Box
If your TV’s audio output is inaccessible (on a wall-mounted TV, for instance)
or unavailable, you can connect the audio output of your cable or satellite
set top box to the ZVOX speaker. Most set top boxes have an “audio output”, in
addition to the HDMI output intended for use with the TV.
To connect between the cable box red and white jacks and the ZVOX speaker,
identify the cable supplied with the soundbar that has a red and white RCA
plugs at each end. Refer to page 3 to help with cable indentification.
Follow the “Make The Connection” instructions in the previous column.
Notes: Many cable/Satellite boxes also have digital/optical outputs. This
is also an option for connection to your Set Top Box.
Do not use your cable remote to adjust volume from the ZVOX speaker. Use the
cable remote to set the indicated TV volume at about 40% of its range. Then
use the ZVOX remote control to adjust volume from the ZVOX speaker.
The SB500/SB700’s Second Digital Input Feature
The optical audio output of a second audio source (like a Bluray/DVD player or
many portable audio players) can be connected to Optical Input 2 on the
soundbar. A source connected to this input can be heard by pressing the INPUT
button on the remote control until you see In2d on the SB500/SB700 soundbar’s
display.
If You Have A Coaxial Digital Audio Signal Source:
This ZVOX Audio soundbar does not have a coaxial-format digital audio input. A
coaxial digital to optical digital audio converter OR a coaxial digital to
stereo ana- log audio converter should be used. Contact ZVOX Audio at
info@zvoxaudio.com to learn what suitable audio
converters are available.
Soundbar Placement
You can place the soundbar on any flat, stable surface near your TV. There are
three general placement options, illustrated above:
Face Front: You can place the soundbar on a flat surface so it faces forward.
This placement is ideal for a shelf below, above or near the television.
Face Up: You can place the soundbar facing up—often in front of the
television. The bottom of the soundbar should face the listening area. Check
to ensure the soundbar does not block the television infrared remote sensor.
There should be no shelf or flat surface immediately above the soundbar in
this configuration.
Wall Mount: The soundbar has two sturdy keyhole-shaped hanger mounts on the
back panel. With the additional owner-supplied hardware, these two attachment
points allow “on wall” placement or secure attachment to a flat surface.
Precautions
-
A safe, secure installation is the soundbar owner’s responsibility.
-
Do not place any objects on top of a soundbar.
-
Consider the finish of the surface that will support the soundbar. It is the soundbar owner’s responsibility to insure that a surface finish that contacts the soundbar is protected, should this be a concern of the soundbar owner.
The contact area on the soundbar is made of inert synthetic materials that typically do not react with furniture or wall finishes. But any wall or surface finish can be altered by having a heavy object resting on it for a long period of time. Place an appropriate barrier between any surface and the soundbar if you are concerned about the finish of the supporting surface. -
Use an unswitched AC outlet to provide power to a soundbar. With the soundbar’s Auto Standby feature turned on, an soundbar will enter its Standby state on or before 30 minutes of inactivity. A soundbar uses less than 0.5 watt in Standby. Using a switched AC outlet to cut off AC power to a soundbar system is not recommended. It delays subsequent turn-on.
Soundbar Wall Mounting Information
The soundbar has two keyhole mounting sites on its back panel. You can mount
the soundbar onto two screwheads using these mounting sites. A ZVOX Audio
soundbar weighs between 15 and 20 pounds.
NOTE: It is the installer’s responsibility to ensure the screws are installed
into the wall or other surface securely and that the screwheads are the
correct size for the hanger mounts on the rear of the soundbar. ZVOX Audio
recommends your mounting sites be able to support at least twice the weight of
the soundbar.

signal for approximately 30 minutes. A command from a remote control or a
restored audio signal will turn it back on.
Mute
Press this button to mute the ZVOX speaker. When the MUTE function is active,
the display blinks “-00-”.The soundbar will enter Standby if it is left in MUTE for longer
than five minutes.
Surround Settings
There are three SURROUND levels:
• Surround One (“Sd 1”) has low virtual surround effect and strong vocals. Use
this setting if vocal clarity is important to you.|
---|---
• Surround Two (“Sd 2”) has moderate virtual surround effect and moderate
vocals. This is the recommended setting for general TV programs.
• Surround Three (“Sd 3”) has strong virtual surround effect and moderate
vocals. Many people prefer this setting when watching movies.
AccuVoice
Press the AccuVoice button to select the AccuVoice function. Additional
presses of the AccuVoice button allow you to select increasing levels of voice
enhancement.
There are six levels of increasing voice enhancement, starting with AC 1 going
up to AC 6. The setting you select remains the default AccuVoice setting until
you decide to change it.
Other Settings Button
The Other Settings button allows Bass and Treble adjustment and turns Output
Leveling On and Off.
- Bass Adjustment: The first press of the Other Settings button displays the current Bass setting. The range of bass adjustment goes from LO 4 to LO-6 (This display is shorthand for Lows plus 4 and Lows minus 6). Use the volume buttons to adjust the bass output across this range. Then wait for the adjustment display to turn off.
- Treble Adjustment: A second press of the Other Settings button displays the current Treble setting. (The range of treble adjustment is HI 4 to HI-4. That is shorthand for Highs plus 4 and Highs minus 4). Use the volume buttons to adjust the bass output across this range. Then wait for the adjustment display to turn off.
- Output Leveling: A third press of the Other Settings button displays the Output Leveling feature. The display will be either OL (Output Leveling engaged) or noOL (Output Leveling off). Use the volume buttons to turn Output Leveling on or off. Then wait for the adjustment display to turn off.
When engaged, Output Leveling prevents large swings in volume. It also reduces
volume differences between TV channels on cable or satellite systems.
A fourth press of the Other Settings button returns you to the current volume
setting and exits Other Settings adjustment.
End Panel Controls on the Soundbar
On the viewer’s right end of the soundbar are four buttons.
A) POWER button:
This button turns the soundbar “ON” if it is in Standby. If this button
pressed briefly while the soundbar is “ON”, it will mute and unmute the
soundbar. To turn off the soundbar, press and hold down this button for about
five seconds.
B) Volume Up/Down rocker button:
Adjusts volume up and down. Pressing either side of this button will “unmute”
the speaker if it is muted.
C) Input button:
A brief press and release of the INPUT button selects the next input in
sequence.
Tonal Profile Setting
The soundbar has three settings to better match the acoustics of its room
position.
Face Front……… PS16 – on a flat surface, facing front.
Face Up…………. PS17 – on a flat surface, facing up.
Wall mount…….. PS18 – on a vertical surface, facing into the room.
The default setting for the soundbar is Face Front.
If your soundbar’s position is Face Up or Wall mount, you should select PS17
or PS18 from the PS menu.
PS Menu operation: You bring up the PS menu by pressing down on two buttons on
the end panel of the soundbar:
Power ( ) and Volume Up (+). After about five to seven seconds, you should see
PS start flashing. The first time you bring up the PS menu, it should show “PS
0”.
Once you see the PS display, release the buttons. Then press and release the
Volume Up button to increase the PS number. Continue pressing and releasing
the Volume Up button until you reach the setting you want: PS16, PS17 or PS18.
For further information about the options provided by the PS menu, see the
separate information sheet Soundbar Adjustment Options, available online at
ZVOX Audio’s
website.
Connecting a Powered Subwoofer to the Soundbar
The ZVOX Audio soundbar has a monaural Subwoofer Output (a single RCA jack). You can connect this signal output to the input of a powered subwoofer for stronger and deeper bass output than what is available from the soundbar alone. For best results, the powered subwoofer should have both volume and low-pass adjustments. Low-pass sets the upper frequency limit of the powered subwoofer.
Connect the Subwoofer Output on the soundbar to the powered subwoofer’s
designated monaural input.
Refer to Step 5 for a description of how to adjust the PS Menu on the
Soundbar. Once the powered subwoofer is connected to the soundbar, use the PS
Menu on the soundbar to select PS31. This stops the soundbar from playing deep
bass, which can be produced by the powered subwoofer. PS30 on the PS Menu
restores deep bass output to the soundbar.
After setting the soundbar to PS31, the low-pass setting on the powered
subwoofer should be set to 85 Hz.
With the soundbar and powered subwoofer connected, the output level of the
powered subwoofer should be adjusted for best blend with the ZVOX Audio
soundbar. A popular music recording with consistent bass output is a good
choice for this step.
For further information about the options provided by the PS menu, see the
separate information sheet Soundbar Adjustment Options, available online at
ZVOX Audio’s website.
Manual On/Off Operation
As delivered, the soundbar turns ON and OFF automatically in response to the
audio signals from the TV and the POWER button on the remote control. If you
do not want the soundbar to automatically turn on and off in response to the
TV’s audio signal, the soundbar can also be configured so it only responds to
the remote control POWER button.
The POWER button on the ZVOX remote control allows you to switch between Auto
On/Off and Manual On/Off modes. To switch modes, first make sure the soundbar
is “ON”. Then press and hold down the POWER button for five seconds. When you
see noAS appear on the display, release the POWER button. noAS indicates that
Manual On/Off mode has been selected. To switch back to Auto On/off mode,
press and hold down the POWER button for five seconds again. Release the POWER
button when you see AS appear on the display. AS indicates that the Auto
On/Off mode has been selected.
Controlling the AccuVoice TV Speaker With Another Remote
The OTHER SETTINGS button can be used to adjust the soundbar so it responds to
one of many cable, satellite or TV remote controls. Visit
www.zvoxaudio.com for guidance regarding this
“works with your preferred remote” feature.
The supplied ZVOX remote control will always adjust the soundbar, even if one
also uses his or her preferred TV remote to control VOLUME, MUTE and POWER on
the AccuVoice TV Speaker Model
Input Panel Infrared Sensor
The soundbar features an input panel infrared sensor. This sensor allows a
wired infrared emitter positioned in the input panel recess to control the
soundbars’s operation.
