BREEDING SEASON FEED GUIDE

Find the right balance this breeding season
Breeding season is filled with the wonder of life. But it requires a delicate balance. A mare and her foal need to be supported with the right nutrients through every stage of development, including pregnancy, foaling, lactation and weaning.
At Barastoc, we start with the needs and requirements of the horse and have developed a wide range of feeds, scientifically designed to provide the best nutrition through every part of their breeding and growing journey.
Having a horse isn’t just a lifestyle, it’s your life.
Finding the perfect mix of feed, that helps them shine inside and out, will help ensure they are getting vital nutrients so they can be given the best chance to grow strong and sound

A smart partnership

Barastoc have partnered with Kentucky Equine Research, who have over 30 years global experience researching equine nutrition and physiology.
Together, we work closely with an international network of world class equestrians, horse breeders and trainers to produce feeds that deliver real results. The experience of Kentucky Equine Research combined with our vast knowledge of Australian horses and conditions, makes Barastoc feed ideal for your horse.

A feed for every age and every stage

Barastoc feeds are developed to condition stallions and preparemares for breeding season, as well as meeting every stage of the process for the broodmare and her weanling. All Barastoc breeding feeds include natural Vitamin E which is proven to boost levels of infection fighting proteins called immunoglobulins and are fortified using Diamond V®, a powerful prebiotic to support gut health, digestion and immunity to help you breed the very best this season.

Breeding & feeding FAQs

How can I support a pregnant mare?

Protein and mineral requirements increase in late pregnancy, particularly copper and zinc. The growing foal stores these trace minerals during late gestation for bone and cartilage development once they are born. This is because mare’s milk is quite low in these vital elements. Barastoc’s range of breeding feeds are fortified with quality protein and trace minerals to support the development of a healthy foal.

When should I start my foal on feed?

During the first couple of months, mares milk should provide the growing foal with everything they need. After about 60-90 days, introducing a feed to support growth and development is important. Barastoc Breed N Grow and Barastoc Low GI Cube are balanced to provide all the nutrients required for sound growth.

What do you recommend for a lactating mare?

Mares in early lactation havelarge increases in energy requirements and may need significantly more feed than during pregnancy. Increased calories may be met with digestible fibre (Speedi-Beetor Barastoc Fibre-Beet Mashand up to 6kg of Barastoc Breed N Grow, or Barastoc Low GI Cube.

What do I feed a weanling?

Weanlings are going through a period of rapid growth and can be at risk of developmental skeletal disease. Ensure they are getting the most balanced nutrition by feeding Barastoc Breed N Grow or Barastoc Low GI Cube to support sound, steady growth. Weanlings on high quality pasture can also be fed Barastoc Stud Balancer or Barastoc Legend, which provides nutrition for growth, with less calories.

How to feed an easy-keeper Less feed. More nutrition.

Horses with access to good pasture or those that are easy keepers or good doers, who don’t need much feed, still need their nutrition requirements to be met. That’s where a concentrated feed comes in.
Barastoc KER Stud Balancer is a concentrated balancer for breeding, growing and performance horses. Ideal for overweight horses, or those on high quality pasture and hay, who require balanced nutrition without the added calories that a full feed provides. The low daily intake meets nutritional requirements at all stages of the breeding cycle. Barastoc KER Stud Balancer is a nutritionally concentrated pellet for breeding, growing and performance horses.
This convenient and premium quality diet balancer will ensure your breeding and growing horses thrive.

Tips for selecting the perfect diet

Regardless of whether you have one prized mare or a whole stud, all horses require a balanced diet with high quality forage as the base. Usually forage requirements can be met by grazing pasture, but often supplementation with hay is necessary.
In order to select the correct  feed choice for your horses, it is important to identify the forage you have available. Barastoc recommends regular pasture and hay testing, which can pick up variations in nutrient levels.
Pasture and hay testing can assess energy levels, protein, sugar, and mineral content such as calcium, phosphorus and selenium.
All horses require a recommended 1.5% of their body weight in forage (dry matter) per day. For a 500kg mare, this equates to 7.5kg of hay. If good quality hay or pasture is not available, fibre intake can also be supplemented with Speedibeet or Fibrebeet.
Hay testing can examine the protein and starch levels to help determine if the hay is suitable for sugar sensitive or insulin resistant horses. Make sure your hay is high quality and weed free and comes from a known source.
For large studs, Barastoc can tailor a special mix to supplement what’s missing in your pasture. Talk to one of our nutrition experts today to figure out the right balance for your horses.

The most important goal for breeders is to produce sound, strong, and healthy young horses. The key to soundness is a strong skeleton, which can only be achieved through correct nutrition during several key periods of development. Pregnancy
The third trimester of pregnancy is vital for providing the growing foal with the nutrients needed for bone and cartilage development, especially copper and zinc.
Ensure your mare is fed a well-balanced feed at the correct intake during her pregnancy to provide the developing foal these essential nutrients. Nursing foals
Mare’s milk is rich in nutrients for growth and development including protein, calcium and phosphorus. Ensure your mare is providing all her foal’s needs by meeting her requirements with a balanced feed. Weanlings
After weaning, young horses enter a period of growth in which their skeleton is a risk of developmental orthopaedic disease (DOD). Although there are many factors linked to DOD, ensuring nutrient intake is optimised and balanced, following a steady growth curve, and consuming higher fibre/ lower starch feeds, can all help avoid growth issues. What makes Barastoc breeding feeds the best for growth and development?
Balanced vitamins and minerals
All feeds in the Barastoc breeding range are fortified using KER vitamin and mineral premix, which ensures optimal levels of bone building nutrients in every mouthful. Barastoc feeds include balanced levels of marco minerals including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and trace minerals such as copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, and iodine.

Formulated with the backing of science

BMC: Research proven bone support
Barastoc Low GI Cube also contains KER Buffered Mineral Complex™ (BMC). This ingredient not only supports gastric health, but also increases bone density. BMC, when combined with specific nutrients in Barastoc Low GI Cube (including trace minerals, and vitamins A, D, K and C), has been research proven to increase bone density in young growing weanlings.
Bioavailable silicon:
Supports bone formation
Barastoc Breed n Grow contains bioavailable silicon. Silicon is an important element in bone and collagen formation, and supplementation can not only support bone growth, but also reduce bone resorption in young growing horses.
Lower starch, high fibre formulations.
Research has shown that weanlings with skeletal disease (Osteochondrosis–OCD) had large spikes in blood sugar following a meal. Feeding young, growing horses’ lower starch, higher fibre feeds which do not produce large blood sugar spikes is an important tool to help prevent the incidence of OCD.
Barastoc’s breeding feeds are formulated using low glycemic ingredients including super fibres and vegetable oils. In addition, any grains included are always cooked before processing to enhance digestibility. Get help from our nutrition experts
