IMPORTANT! 2 PEOPLE NEEDED FOR THIS INSTALLATION
FOR EASIER ACCESS! BEFORE YOU START, PLACE THE VEHICLE IN SPORT MODE (LOWEST) SETTING FOR EASIER ACCESS IN THE FRUNK.
STEP 1: REMOVING THE PLASTIC TRIM
Open the hood and remove the plastic trim pieces beginning with the front
section while pulling upwards starting from the middle and working your way
towards the outside (See Fig. 1). Starting on either side of your R1 remove
the plastic tree clip located near the windshield with the provided removal
tool (Fig. 2).
Next lift and remove the trim panel starting in the front of the vehicle and
working your way towards the windshield (Figs. 3 & 4). Repeat this for the
other side.
Now remove the trim panel closest to the windshield by starting on either side and working your way towards the center of the vehicle (See Figs. 5 & 6).
STEP 2: REMOVING THE TUB
Remove the six silver screws using a 10mm socket located around the frunk tub,
there are two in front, one on each side, and two on the windshield side (See
Figs. 7 & 8).
The tub should now have some movement.
On either side of the vehicle, lift up on the tub and locate the plug for the
led lights.
By pressing down on the retaining tab (with thumb or provided trim removal
tool) and pulling at the same time, you will be able to disconnect the plug
(Figs. 9 & 10). Repeat for the other side and the tub will now be free to be
removed.
While possible to do by yourself it is much easier to have someone help you remove the tub (Figs. 11 & 12).
STEP 3: MOUNTING THE HORN
This may look intimidating at first, but don’t worry we’ll walk you through
this. The horn is loosely mounted to the bracket to allow it to fit properly
during install. This will get tightened up later in this step.
The horn is going to mount in the drivers side wheel well area, first locate
and remove this plastic tree clip with a flat head screw driver or the removal
tool (See Figs. 13 & 14). Next place your pre assembled horn and mounting
bracket in the frunk opening and run the wire harness up from the wheel well
area to the opening behind the headlight and let the excess wire hang over the
side (Fig. 15).
Now put the horn and mounting bracket in place lining up the mounting slots (Fig. 16). Take the removed plastic tree clip and place it back in its original location through the mounting bracket (Fig. 17). Now take the supplied bolt, washer, nut and place it through the upper mounting slot Then tighten using a 13mm or 1/2” socket and wrench (Fig. 18). After making sure the horn is clear of all wires and sitting nicely in the open pocket use a 13mm or 1/2” wrench to tighten the horn bolt (Fig. 19).
STEP 4: PLUGGING IN THE HORN
Turn the wheels all the way to the right and locate the 6 screws in the wheel well liner (See Fig. 20). Using a TP20 (a T20 works as well), remove all 6 of them (Fig. 21). Lift the liner up from the bottom, then pull back from the side to gain access to the factory horn location (Fig. 22 & 23).
Reach in and unplug the factory horn connector (Fig. 24). Now take the Y-Connector end of your new harness extension and route it as shown into the wheel well area (Fig. 25). Plug the Y-Connector into the factory horn (Fig .26), and connect the factory horn plug to the harness (Fig. 27).
Working from passenger side to driver’s side, route the wire harness as shown (Fig. 28). Plug the harness into you new horn (Fig. 29). Zip Tie and secure the new harness to the factory harness as shown and trim excess off of zipties. (Fig. 30).
STEP 5: MAKING THE CONNECTION
Lift up on the cabin air filter shroud and set to the side (See Fig. 31 & 32). Following the factory wire harness, run the wires towards the windshield and behind the cowl clip location (Fig. 33).
Using the removal tool depress the mounting cover tabs on the primary battery block cover and set aside (See Fig. 34). Using a 8mm wrench remove the ground bolt located just in front of the battery block (Fig. 35). Try not to drop the bolt as it can be hard to find.
Take the black ground wire and mount it under the bolt and tighten back up (Fig. 36). Using a 13mm or 1/2” socket, remove the nut on the block located closest to the driver side headlight (Fig. 37). Place the red power wire with the fuse holder over the post and tighten the nut back into place (Figs. 38 & 39).
Place the battery block cover back on and clip into place (Fig. 40).
Place the cabin air filter shroud back into position (Fig. 41). Take the
supplied fuse and fully insert it into the fuse holder and close the
protective cap (Fig. 42). Now its time to test your horn. Give it a honk and
hear your new power on the road!
STEP 6: BUTTONING UP THE WIRING
Under your hood should now look like this (See Fig. 43). Starting at the battery block, take a supplied zip tie and bundle the wires together (Fig. 44). Make sure the wire loom is routed like this behind the cowl mounting location (Fig. 45). Using 4 more zip ties, fasten the wire loom to the factory wire harness along the fender (Fig. 46). Place the last zip tie on the Y-connector and connect it to the factory wire harness (Fig. 47). Snip of the excess zip tie tabs and discard.
STEP 7: REINSTALL THE FRUNK/TRIM
Place the frunk back into position and plug in the two LED lights on each
side. Reinstall and tighten the six bolts using a 10mm socket. Replace all the
plastic trim pieces starting with the one closest to the windshield and then
both sides, then the front piece is last. Make sure that each clip is fully
seated before moving onto the next piece.
After placing the side trim pieces, don’t forget to put the plastic tree clips
back into place. Close the hood and you are all finished. GREAT JOB installing
your new horn!
