Installation Order: Sill, Header, 2 Jambs
Cut and Fit Sill
The sill is sloped for water drainage. The sill has a slope built into it
during the manufacturing process – make sure that adequate slope is maintained
and that water will run off
A. The sill can either be notched to overlap the jamb, or end up flush. This
determination should be made.
B. Rip (cut) sill to required depth. The ripped edge will not be seen. It will
come in contact with the window. Additional fitting can be done with a belt
sander if needed.
C. Measure between the jamb studs of the window opening and ensure that they
are square. This may have to be addressed when installing the jamb pieces.
Measure the narrowest part of the sill between the side jambs. Determine how
much overlap of the ears of the jamb you will want. Measure in the amount plus
approximately 1/4”-1/2” and make a mark. Determine the depth of the sill. Mark
this area to be notched out. (Tip: Jambs can be a little tricky due to
leftover sheetrock mud or other framing inconsistencies. Use a level, square
or flat edge to check all planes to make sure they are square and flat. Make
necessary adjustments ahead of time.) If there is extra length, cut off the
extra, making the end the same as the other.
Double check your measurements and make notch cuts with a jig saw. Check
your fit and make necessary adjustments. The extra length of the ears will be
cut off after checking jamb fit.
Cut and Fit Header
The header is not sloped and will not need to extend beyond the outside build-
up of the jambs.
Follow the instructions above, starting with step A.
Cut and Fit Jambs
A. With the header and sill securely held in place, cut the jamb to the proper
length. Be sure to cut the necessary angle on the sill side. This will be
approximately 2 degrees.
B. Fit the whole unit together and mark the desired length of the notch cuts
on the sill and header
C. Cut the ears from the sill and header. These ends will be visible and
should be sanded using 150, 220, and 320 grit sandpaper, in that order.
With the completely cut and dry fit, disassemble the unit.
Sealing and Installing
A. Apply silicone to the edge of the sill and jambs that will come in contact
with the window. A line of silicone should be applied on the inside corner of
the sills and jambs. Make sure that any leveling shims used are in location.
B. Using a couple of dots of silicone on the flat contact surfaces, install
the sill and header. With the header held in place, apply silicone where the
ends of the jambs come in contact with the header and sill. Slide the jambs
into place. Remove all excess silicone (using the alcohol if necessary). Check
all joints for voids and reseal as necessary to prevent leakage and fill any
gaps remaining with the color-matched silicone provided.
