Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the product. Any mounting of the product should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer.

• BATTERIES: Warning: Batteries shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine, fire, or the like.

• CAUTION! POLARISED CONNECTOR (CANADA and USA):
  To prevent electrical shock, match the wide blade of the plug to the wide slot, and fully insert. Do not alter or remove this plug if it does not fit your mains power socket. Have a suitable socket installed by a competent electrician.

• ACCESS TO THE MAINS PLUG: The means to disconnect this product from the mains supply is the mains plug. Ensure that the mains plug is accessible at all times.

Power supply

Connect the molded IEC connector of the supplied AC cord to the power inlet on the rear of the unit. The main supply requirement of your preamplifier is marked on a label on the rear panel. Before connecting, check that this voltage is the same as your main supply.

• 220-230V Products: Voltage Range 220V-240V
• 115V Products: Voltage Range 110V-120V

If you move to an area with a different mains voltage, contact your local Cyrus distributor to have your product converted. There are no user- replaceable fuses in this unit.

Servicing

Do not attempt to service this product yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

CONDITIONS REQUIRING SERVICE:
Unplug this product from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel when:

• When the power supply cord or plug is damaged.
• If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the product.
• If the product has been exposed to rain or water.
• If the product has been dropped or damaged in any way.
• If the product does not operate normally by following the operating instructions. (Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions. Improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage requiring extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to its normal operation).
• When the product exhibits a distinct change in performance.

REPLACEMENT PARTS:

Preparations for Installation

Before installing your Cyrus preamplifier check that the following items are included in the accessory box.

• Power Cable
• Remote Handset with batteries
• 2 x Phono leads for MC-BUS connection
• Quick-start guide

After removing these items, please retain the packaging. Install the preamplifier in a well-ventilated location away from sources of high temperature, dust, or humidity. Never stand the preamplifier under another unit or on any surface likely to obstruct its cooling or ventilation.

Adjustable feet
The product feet are adjustable for height. As supplied, all feet are set for minimum height.

If required, one or more of the feet may be adjusted to level the product when placed on an uneven surface.

• Determine which foot will require adjustment.
• Raise the chassis slightly.
• Grip the foot and unscrew it slightly from the baseplate.
• Re-check the stability of the product and adjust further if necessary.

CAUTION:
Never unscrew any of the feet by more than a half-turn to avoid any possibility of the foot becoming detached from the baseplate. This would leave an exposed thread under the product which may damage furnishings etc.

Important – read before making any audio connections
To avoid possible damage to your preamplifier, it is essential to disconnect all system components from the main supply before connecting or disconnecting audio interconnects.

Connecting turntables
Turntables may be connected to any of the four available inputs 5-8 as each input is separately programmable for use with moving coil or moving magnet cartridges.

• Connect the left and right plugs from the turntable audio cable to the left (white) and right (red) connectors of the input you are using.
• Connect the ground wire from the turntable to the corresponding ground terminal.

Setting the ground lift switch

• The chassis of the Classic PHONO is connected to the main ground. The Ground Lift switch 4 enables the circuit of the Classic PHONO to be linked to mains ground or isolated. The setting of this will be system-dependent.
• The factory setting for the switch is to the ‘LIFT’ position. If any hum or buzz noises are apparent when playing a turntable, setting the switch to the ‘GND’ (grounded) position may cure the problem.
• If hum or noise problems persist when playing a turntable and the switch setting does not cure the problem, contact your retailer to check the ground connection arrangements on your turntable and other system components.

Connecting the output
There is a choice of balanced (XLR) or unbalanced (phono) outputs to connect to your system preamplifier/amplifier.

NOTE:
The Classic PHONO does not include a volume control so it is not suitable for direct connection to a power amplifier. It must be connected to an amplifier that includes a volume control.

Connecting balanced XLR outputs
The XLR outputs 3 are compatible with balanced audio inputs on a preamplifier.

• Connect left and right XLR cables between the left and right XLR outputs of the Classic PHONO and the corresponding inputs of the preamplifier.

Connecting unbalanced phono outputs
The phono outputs 2 are compatible with unbalanced audio inputs on a preamplifier.

• Connect a dual phono cable between the left and right phono outputs of the Classic PHONO and the corresponding inputs of the preamplifier.

MC-BUS System

• Connecting the MC-BUS sockets in an MC-BUS system provides unified system control.
• An MC-BUS loop is established by connecting single phono cables from the MC-BUS output of one unit to the MC-BUS input of another in a daisy chain. Complete the loop by returning the MC-BUS output of the final component to the MC-BUS input of the first.
• With the MC-BUS connection established you can control the power function of the entire system from the front panel or remote control. Selecting ‘CD’ from the front panel will switch on the preamplifier, the Cyrus power amplifier, and a Cyrus CD player. When the preamplifier is set to Standby, the entire system will also switch off.
• When a Cyrus Surround Processor is included in the MC-BUS loop, the setting of the volume calibration level will take place automatically when the ‘Cyrus AV’ input is selected. Refer to the handbook for the Surround Processor for further details.

External power supply – PSX-R
The PSX-R is a unique DC power supply that will upgrade the sonic performance of compatible products in the Cyrus range including the Classic PHONO.

Connecting a PSX-R

• Disconnect both components from the mains.
• Plug the connector on the umbilical cord of the PSX-R into the Multi-Pole PSX-R socket on the back panel. You will need a main supply for both units.

NOTE:
The connection of a PSX-R is detected automatically, so no internal adjustments are required.

How it works
When a PSX-R is connected to a Cyrus product, the power feeds to the internal circuitry are split two ways with the clean, stable power source of the PSX-R feeding sensitive circuit sections while other requirements are supplied internally. This ensures complete isolation of control circuits and sensitive analogue sections reducing AC mains-borne noise and power supply ripple.

Connecting to the AC mains supply

• Connect the socket on the AC Power cable to the power inlet on the back panel of the preamplifier.
• Now connect the cable to a suitable AC power point.

NOTE:
The means to disconnect this product from the mains supply is the mains plug. Ensure that the mains plug is accessible at all times.

Key operation
Except for the WARP key, the Classic PHONO keys are operated in two stages to avoid accidental key operation. This could cause noise by selecting unterminated inputs etc.

The key operation sequence is

• Press a key to select input, loading, etc.
• Turn the Rotary Control to step through the options.
• Press the Rotary Control to select the displayed option.

Power

• When power is applied, the STANDBY key 1 is used for power control. The Standby indicator 2 shows green when the amplifier is operating and glows red when in standby mode.
• In regular use, the Classic PHONO should be connected permanently to the main power supply. When left unattended for a long period (holidays etc) it should be disconnected from the AC supply.

Selecting an Input

• Press the INPUT key 12.
  The current input number will be displayed.

• Turn the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to change to another input.

• Press the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to select the input. After a short delay, the input will be selected.

Settings display

• The display will indicate the input number selected and whether the input is set for MM or MC operation.
• The display will also indicate the gain setting in dB, the input resistive load setting (IP R), and the input capacitive load setting (IP C).
• The bar graph display shows a graphic indication of the left and right channel levels. This can assist with setting MC gain.

MM/MC cartridge type selection
Each input can be set to be compatible with either Moving Magnet or Moving Coil cartridges.

To change between MM and MC for the selected input –

• Press the MM/MC key 10.
• Turn the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to switch between the Moving Magnet and Moving Coil settings.
• Press the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to select a new setting.

After a short delay, the cartridge type will change and the selection will be saved for this input.

MM/MC indicator

• The MM/MC indicator will light yellow when an input is set to Moving Magnet and green when set to Moving Coil.
• When an input is selected or a setting is changed the indicator will change to red briefly to indicate that the sound is muted.

Cartridge matching

• Moving coil cartridges
  If you have connected a moving coil cartridge to one or more of the inputs, you should now refer to the ‘Configuring MC Inputs’ section on the next page to configure those input(s).

• Moving magnet cartridges
  For inputs set for moving magnet cartridges, the gain, resistive load, and capacitive load settings are pre-optimized to standard values that best match this type of cartridge. The GAIN, RES (resistance load), and CAP (capacitance load) keys are therefore disabled and the indicators will not light.

Warp filter
The warp filter will assist in removing very low-frequency information caused by warps in the vinyl. In a high-quality record-playing system these large amplitude signals may overload a preamplifier or cause large bass unit excursions for the loudspeakers.

• Press the WARP key 11 to switch in the warp filter. The WARP indicator will light and ‘FLTR’ will be displayed. Low-frequency signals caused by warps will be reduced. Press again to cancel the warp filter.

Configuring MC inputs
When an input is configured to play a Moving Coil cartridge, the gain, resistive load, and capacitive load settings may be individually set to best match the requirements of different pickup cartridges.

Checking the current settings
The settings displayed apply to the input that is currently selected.

Manufacturer’s specification
Some cartridge manufacturers will provide output voltage and optimum loading specifications for their cartridges. If these specifications are available, this is the best starting point for input configuration. A typical cartridge specification may read –

• Output voltage …………..150μV
• Load resistance …………..>50Ω
• Load capacitance ………..Not specified

These specifications can be used to choose initial settings for gain and load. Gain can be manually set from the table in the next section, load resistance should be set to a value above the manufacturer’s recommended minimum, and load capacitance should be set to the closest value or to the minimum 220pF when not specified.

If no specification is available

• If no manufacturer’s data is available for the cartridge, start with the default settings for resistance and capacitance loading and an initial setting of 40dB for gain.
• The gain setting can then be determined using the bar graph.

Setting MC gain

Manual gain setting
The gain settings for the Classic PHONO can be matched to a cartridge output voltage range as shown in the following table.

• The factory setting is 40dB to reduce the possibility of input overload. The gain can be increased if required for a lower output cartridge.
• In the ‘Manufacturer’s recommendation’ example above, the 70dB gain setting would best match the cartridge.

To change the gain setting

• Press the GAIN key 9.

• Turn the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to step through the options available.

• Press the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to select a new setting.
  The GAIN indicator will change color from green to yellow. This indicates that the setting has changed from the value previously stored.

• If you prefer this setting and want to save it for the selected input, refer to the ‘Saving changes to settings’ section.

Setting gain using the bar graph
The display bar graph can also be used to optimize the gain setting for a moving coil cartridge. The limit mark on the bar graph corresponds to an output level equivalent to a CD player which should ensure compatibility with most preamplifiers. Levels exceeding this may cause some preamplifiers to overload.

• Play a record that includes loud passages of music.

The bar graph will show the level of the music as it plays. Music peaks will hold briefly. Experiment with different gain settings to achieve a bar graph display that has the largest amplitude without exceeding the limit mark.

NOTE:
If you hear any distortion when playing loud passages of music, check that the signal level displayed on the bar graph does not exceed the limit line and reduce the gain setting if necessary.

Setting MC cartridge loading

Resistive load setting
In the ‘Manufacturer’s recommendation’ example, the 50Ω setting would best match the cartridge shown.

The factory setting is 1kΩ. To change the resistive load setting

• Press the RES key 8.

• Turn the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to step through the options available.
  Choose from 11Ω, 16Ω, 33Ω, 47Ω, 100Ω, 150Ω, 333Ω, 500Ω, 1kΩ, 47kΩ,

• Press the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to select a new setting.
  The RES indicator will change color from green to yellow. This indicates that the setting has changed from the value previously stored.

• If you prefer this setting and want to save it for the selected input, refer to the ‘Saving changes to settings’ section.

Capacitive load setting
In the ‘Manufacturer’s recommendation’ example above, the lowest 220pF setting would best match the cartridge shown.

The factory setting is 220pF. To change the capacitive load setting

• Press the CAP key 7.

• Turn the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to step through the options available.
  Choose from 220pF, 1nF, 2nF, 3nF.

• Press the ROTARY CONTROL 5 to select a new setting.
  The CAP indicator will change color from green to yellow. This indicates that the setting has changed from the value previously stored.

• If you prefer this setting and want to save it for the selected input, refer to the ‘Saving changes to settings’ section.

Fine-tuning cartridge load settings

• Changing cartridge load settings will not damage a cartridge and you may find a combination of settings that you prefer by changing the settings while listening.
• The effects of changing load resistance and capacitance will be quite subtle, though setting load resistance to the lower values will also reduce the output level from the cartridge. The gain may be increased to compensate if necessary.
• Increasing the load resistance may also provide a subtle tonal correction to benefit older records that have been played very regularly.

Saving changes to gain or loading settings

Saving new settings

• If you have made changes to settings for an input (one or more of the GAIN, RES or CAP indicators will be yellow) and want to save them, press the STORE button 6.

Changes in settings will be saved and the GAIN, RES and CAP indicators will change to green.

Reverting to previous settings
If you make changes to settings but do not press the STORE key, these temporary settings will be retained if you set to Standby, but will be lost if you disconnect mains power.

Factory settings

• You can restore the configuration of your preamplifier to the factory’s original settings.
• To restore the settings, first disconnect the power cord from the preamplifier. Hold down the store key on the front panel and re-connect the power cord.

REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION

Remote control introduction

• The iR14 remote control will send commands to Cyrus amplifiers, CD players, an Audio streamer, and the Classic PHONO.
• The remote control can also be programmed with the commands from two other remote control handsets. These will normally be for your TV and a Satellite or terrestrial TV set-top box, programmed to the TV and SAT buttons, but could also be other audio components such as a Cyrus tuner or DVD player, etc.

Remote control backlight
The remote control keypad includes a backlight. The backlight will switch on automatically when moved or when a command is sent.

Fitting batteries to the remote control
The battery compartment is on the back of the remote control.

1. Press the catch on the battery cover and lift off the cover.
2. Slide a AAA battery under the retaining hook in the upper half of the battery compartment as shown.
3. Fit a second AAA battery into the remaining space.
4. Replace the battery cover.
   • Replace the handset batteries only with AAA batteries of the same voltage and type.
   • Discard used batteries per recycling regulations in force in your area.

Sending commands to Cyrus components
Press the CYRUS key to set the remote control to Cyrus mode to control the Classic PHONO and an amplifier.

Switching on Cyrus components

• Press one of the keys in the SOURCE group.
• Press or switch on and send commands to a Cyrus amplifier and Classic PHONO.
• Press the key to switch on a Cyrus CD player and send commands to a Cyrus CD player and amplifier.
• Press the key to switch on a Cyrus Audio streamer and send commands to a Cyrus Audio streamer and amplifier.

NOTE:
If amplifier inputs have been named CD and/or Stream X, the correct amplifier input will also be selected.

Cyrus amplifier commands

• Press the CYRUS key to set the remote control to Cyrus mode.
• You can now control the Cyrus amplifier. The CYRUS key will flash red when commands are being sent in Amplifier mode.

The Amplifier mode commands available are listed below

1. Set Cyrus amplifiers, CD players, and Audio streamers to Standby.
2. Set the handset to send commands to Cyrus components.
3. Send commands to a Satellite receiver (or other device programmed to use this key).
4. Set the handset to send commands to an amplifier and CD player.
5. Step to the next amplifier input.
6. No command for an amplifier.
7. No command for an amplifier.
8. No command for an amplifier.
9. No command for an amplifier.
10. No command for an amplifier.

Cyrus CD player commands

• Press the CYRUS key
• Press the key to set the remote control to CD mode.

The key will light red. You can now control both a Cyrus CD player and an amplifier. The key will flash red when commands are being sent in CD mode.

The CD mode commands available are listed below

1. Set Cyrus amplifiers, CD players, and Audio streamers to Standby.
2. Set the handset to send commands to an amplifier.
3. Send commands to a Satellite receiver (or other device programmed to use this key).
4. Set the handset to send commands to an amplifier and CD player.
5. Step to the next amplifier input.
6. No command for a CD player.
7. CD player repeat.

16. CD player audio phase. Phase changes are subtle and are best established from the listening position. The performance of the CD player is unaffected whether the signal is in normal or phase inverted mode.

Cyrus audio streamer commands

• Press the key to set the remote control to Audio streamer mode.

The key will light red. You can now control both a Cyrus Audio streamer and amplifier or an Audio streamer that includes an amplifier. The key will flash red when commands are being sent in Audio streamer mode.

The Audio streamer mode commands available are listed below

Cyrus Classic PHONO commands

• Commands are sent to the Classic PHONO via keys reserved from the amplifier control system.
• The remote control operates in the same way as the front panel controls – press a key to select a function, change that setting with the CURSOR keys, confirm the setting with ENTER/SELECT.
• This page lists commands that will control the Classic PHONO.
  • Press the CYRUS key to set the remote control to Cyrus mode.
• You can now control both a Cyrus amplifier and the Classic PHONO. The CYRUS key will flash red when commands are being sent in this mode.

Remote control learning

• In addition to controlling Cyrus components, the remote control can learn the commands from two other remote control handsets. These will normally be a TV and a Satellite or terrestrial TV set-top box, programmed to the TV and SAT buttons, but could also be other audio components including a Cyrus tuner or DVD player, etc.
• All keys may be programmed except for the groups marked CONTROL and SOURCE and the SETUP key.

Preparation for learning
Check the following points before attempting to learn any commands

• Check that both remote controls have fresh batteries.
• Choose a location on a tabletop that is not brightly lit. Subdued light is better, away from bright natural or indoor lighting.
• Check that you have enough time to spare to complete the learning process for all the keys you want to use.

Learning commands
In this example, the Cyrus remote control will be learning commands from a ‘reference’ Satellite receiver remote control.

1. Set the two remote controls up facing each other, spaced by about 5cm.

2. Press the TV or SAT key to select the mode that you want to program.
   The keypad will light and the key you selected will be red.

3. Press and hold the SETUP key.
   The mode key will change to white. After about three seconds, the mode key will light red again. This indicates that the remote control is ready to learn codes.

4. Release the SETUP key.
   The remote control is now waiting to learn commands. The keypad will light continually and the mode key will light pale red.

5. On the reference remote control, press and hold the first key you want to learn (for example, volume up) until the mode key flashes red. This indicates that the command has been received.

6. Release the key on the reference remote control.

7. Press a key on the Cyrus remote control (volume up in this example) to select where you want to save that command.

   • The mode key will stop flashing. This indicates that the command has been saved successfully.
   • If the learning process is successful, the remote control will be ready to learn the next command.

8. Repeat steps 5 to 7 for each command you want to learn.

When you have completed learning all commands

• Press the SETUP key.

The mode key will change to white. After a few seconds, the backlight will switch off.

Checking programmed commands

• Select the mode that you just programmed and check that the commands were learned successfully.
  NOTE: The TV or SAT mode key should flash red when sending a command. If the mode key is not flashing, then the command has not been learned correctly.

• Make a note of any commands that have not been programmed correctly and repeat the learning process to add these in.

NOTE:
When you start the learning process it does not erase any programmed keys so you can re-program individual keys if required.

Problems with learning

• If none of the commands have been learned correctly, try re-starting the learning process again. Test a few keys first to ensure that your handset is compatible for learning. If the test works then continue to program the rest of the commands you need.
• If you still have problems, check carefully that the mode light is flashing correctly as you send a command to learn. If not, it may be that the batteries need replacement in the reference handset or that the spacing between the handsets is not ideal. Try adjusting the spacing between the handsets and repeating the learning process.
• If you continue to have problems, it may be that your handset is incompatible with the learning process. This could happen with an older design of a handset or one that has an unusual code set.

Sending TV or SAT commands
Once you have programmed all the keys with the commands you want, you can use the remote control to send commands to your TV or Satellite receiver, etc.

• Press the TV or SAT key to select the mode you want.
• Press the command key.

The mode key will flash red when sending a programmed command.

Troubleshooting guide

• If your Classic PHONO is not operating properly, disconnect the power and check carefully all connections.
• If you are in any doubt, consult your retailer.

No sound

The preamplifier is switched off or set to Standby| Bring the unit out of Standby (Standby light – GREEN)
The wrong input is selected| Check that the input is connected correctly and re-select if necessary.
Connection problems| Check that the turntable is connected correctly. If so, check that the connections to the pickup cartridge are correct.

Check the output connections from the Classic PHONO to the system amplifier.

Other system component settings| Check that the system amplifier is switched on and set to the correct input.
No sound from one loudspeaker
Connection problems| Check that the turntable is connected correctly. If so, check that the connections to the pickup cartridge are correct.
Other system components| If possible, check the system with another source. Check that the balance control is not set to one channel.
Speaker cables/interconnects faulty| Check connections, and cables – replace if needed
Hum or buzz
Ground loop| Change the position of the ground lift switch. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, there may be a ground loop via the

turntable and some other components in your system. Take the turntable to your retailer to get this checked.

Hum pickup| Ensure that the turntable and connection cables are positioned away from any equipment that could radiate a magnetic field, particularly large power amplifiers. Re-positioning the turntable and cables temporarily will help to identify if this is the problem.

Distortion
Distorted sound on loud passages when using a moving coil cartridge| The output signal level may be too high for the system preamplifier. Reduce the gain setting.

Your Classic PHONO has a unique fault indication system to help you to diagnose problems.

Possible fault Indications on the display during use, the display will show:

Muted (DC)

DC is present at the output of the amplifier| If this is a constant indication, switch off the preamplifier and disconnect all inputs and outputs. Switch on with no input or output connections. If the indication persists, return the unit for service.
PSU Service
A problem has been detected with the power supply.| If a PSX-R is connected to the preamplifier, disconnect it and re-test. If the indication persists, return the unit for service.

If a fault condition remains, return the preamplifier to your Cyrus-appointed retailer or an authorized Service Centre.
