Scope of Use

This high-performance burner is ideal for warming, burning off, shrinking, asphalt work, roofing, drying concrete, as well as for chemical-free weed and moss killing. Use of the appliance for any other purposeor modifications to the appliance count as misuse and can be extremely dangerous. The appliance may only be used with propane or a propane/butane mix and with a suitable constant pressure regulator. Use only refillable LPG cylinders. It can be dangerous to connect the burner to other types of gas cylinder. Commercial users must use a hose failure safety device while using this appliance. This is also recommended for domestic users. The hose failure safety device can be obtained from the manufacturer as Art. No. 035925E.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Measures to be taken before connecting the gas cylinder

  • Use only the gas containers and burner components described in this manual.
  • The use of gas containers and/or burner components other than those described can be dangerous.
  • Use only approved replacement parts.
  • Never connect a gas cylinder to the device without first reading the instructions printed on it.
  • Check that the seal between the regulator and the gas container is in place and in good condition before connecting to the gas container.
  • Do not use the appliance if it has damaged or worn seals. Do not use an appliance that is leaking, damaged, or which does not operate properly.
  • Check the hoses for damage.
  • Never operate the device if any part is damaged.
  • Connect or change the gas cylinder in a well-ventilated location, preferably outside, away from any sources of ignition, such as naked flames, pilots, electric fires and away from other people.
  • Shut the taps on the appliance before connecting the gas container.
  • Make certain that all connections are airtight and ensure that the gas connection is airtight before you light the burner.
  • Smoking while connecting the gas cylinder is prohibited. Observe the instructions on container replacement. The assembly must always start from the gas container.
  • Beware of heating of the gas cylinder or burning of hoses. Replace accessories if necessary

Operating conditions

  • Set the device up such that it cannot topple or fall over.
  • To prevent the risk of liquefied gas escaping, the gas cylinder may only be used when it is standing upwards.
  • The appliance may not be used underground.
  • Do not use the appliance in the proximity of heat sources (radiators, ovens, open fires, etc.).
  • Use the appliance only in well-ventilated spaces. Observe applicable national regulations:
  • For the supply of combustion air
  • To prevent the accumulation of dangerous amounts of un-burnt gas.
  • Use the burner only well away from inflammable or oily materials
  • Wear protective clothing free of grease.
  • Ensure that no vapors are inhaled.
  • Always close the burner component when you take a break from work.
  • The appliance may not be left unattended during operation as gas can escape if the flame goes out. This is potentially dangerous.
  • Always store the appliance out of the reach of children and prevent children from gaining access to the appliance.
  • An irregular flame can be produced for a short duration if a new gas cylinder is connected to a cold burner.
  • To prevent the risk of burns, do not touch the burner after use, even if the appliance has only been in use for a short while.

CAUTION! Accessible parts can be very hot. Keep children away from the appliance.

What to do in case of a leak
If there is a leak on your appliance (smell of gas or formation of bubbles during a leak test) take it outside immediately into a well-ventilated flame- free location where the leak may be detected and stopped. If you wish to check for leaks on your appliance, do it outside. Do not try to detect leaks using a flame, use soapy water or a leak detection spray. Keep the appliance under observation until all of the gas has escaped. Observe the device till the gas has escaped from it fully.

CONNECTING TO A GAS CYLINDER

Proceed as follows to connect the appliance to a gas container:

  • Ensure that all valves are closed.
  • Make sure that the seal (between the pressure regulator and the gas container) is in place and in good condition. Depending on the version/country, the seal may be located in the pressure regulator connection, in the gas cylinder connection or in both connections. In case of doubt, please contact your local gas dealer.
  • Check the condition of the hose and regulator each time before using the burner. Do not use a hose or regulator that is damaged or worn.
  • Connect the pressure regulator to the gas cylinder. Ensure that the direction of rotation of the thread is correct (there may be differences according to country).
  • Install the hose failure safety device, if available.
  • Connect the gas hose to the pressure regulator and to the appliance. The hose end connector and the appliance connector have left-handed threads.
  • Tighten the connections with suitably sized open-ended wrenches (M 17, 18, 19, 30). Do not exert excessive force to prevent over-tightening or damaging the threads.
  • Open the cylinder valve. Ensure that all the connections are tight. Use a leakage detection spray or soapy water for this purpose. The connections may have to be re-tightened.
  • Do not use the device if you suspect that there is a leak in the system.
  • Close the cylinder valve after performing the leakage test.

LIGHTING AND ADJUSTING THE BURNER

Proceed as follows to ignite the burner and to adjust the flame:

  • Open the cylinder valve first, then open the appliance’s adjustment valve. Follow the indicated direction of rotation (+: anti-clockwise. -: clockwise).
  • In case of small burners and freshly filled cylinders in particular, wait for a short duration so that the trapped air may escape.
  • Model 030954E, 030957E, 030958E, 030961E: Ignite the flame at the lower edge of the burner connection (using a gas lighter).
  • Model 030955E: Press the Piezo ignition (several times if necessary).
  • Open the gas valve further at the handle. The flame should not split at the burner edge forcing the output to fall below the required temperature.
  • The economy flame (030954E, 030955E, 030957E, 030958E) or the preset flame (030961E) is maintained without pulling the gas lever. On pulling the gas lever a full flame is produced according to the preset flame pattern setting (030954E, 030955E, 030957E, 030958E) or the maximum flame is produced (030961E).
  • Release the gas lever during short breaks.
  • Place the burner only on the burner stand provided. Burners without stands (030961E) may be put down only in fully cooled state.
  • Avoid twisting and stressing the hose.

FINISHING WORK – EXTINGUISHING THE FLAME

  • After finishing work first shut the gas cylinder valve.
  • Continue to use the burner and do not put it down it until any gas remaining in the hose has been consumed, and the flame is extinguished.
  • Close the gas regulating knob after extinguishing the flame.
  • Allow the appliance to cool down, as some components may become very hot even after a short period of operation.
  • The appliance must be allowed to cool down completely before dismantling and storage!

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

CHANGING GAS CYLINDERS

  • The gas cylinder may be changed only in the open, well away from sources of ignition and other persons.
  • Shut the cylinder valve and the appliance valve.
  • If the appliance is under operation, check whether the flame has extinguished, and allow the appliance to cool down fully.
  • Unscrew the gas regulator and remove it.
  • Proceed as described in the section ‘Connecting to a gas cylinder’.

CLEANING
Clean the device regularly with a dry cloth. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents, solvents or petroleum spirit. Do not dip the burner in liquids.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

  • The device does not require any maintenance.
  • The nozzle does not require any cleaning.
  • Do not make any modifications to the device.
  • If the device develops a fault, have it repaired at a competent workshop or contact the manufacturer. The address is given on the reverse.

STORAGE AND TRANSPORT

  • If the burner is not to be used over longer periods, keep it at a safe, cool, dry and well-ventilated place out of the reach of children.
  • Protect the pressurized gas cylinder from sunlight and never expose it to temperatures above 50°C.
  • The gas tank must be detached if the burner is not to be used over longer periods, or if it is to be transported.
  • Reusable tanks must always be refilled at authorized companies. Improper refilling can lead to serious accidents.
