How to Care for an Air Plant Tillandsia

SELECT SITE:

Grows Outdoors All Year Only in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 9,10,11
Grow Indoors or Outdoors in All Other Zones::
This plant thrives in temperatures between 55-90 deg
F When temps fall below 55 deg F, the plant must be brought indoors.
Select a site with good air circulation.
Light Requirements:
Loves brightly lit areas with indirect light. Rooms with South- or East facing windows make good candidates because these spaces will be brightly illuminated with sun for most of the day. Rooms with North- windows work well as long as the plant is placed close to the window & the sunlight is not blocked by any obstructions. Western light is not ideal because the sun tends to come late in the day and can be very hot & intense, which can quickly burn the air plant.
Humidity & Temperature:
General guidance: The higher the humidity in your space the more light is tolerated by the air plant. If your air plant receives lots of light, you should plant to mist it more often, twice a week, or even daily. A sunny bathroom or an active kitchen is ideal because the humidity from the shower or boiling water will probably be sufficient for the air plant to survive with minimal misting from you..
Soil: Grows with no soil, never put your air plant in soil.

WATERING REGIMEN:

Do all watering in the morning.
Every one to two weeks quickly dips your air plant in room temperature tap water, then turn the plant upside down & gently shake the excess water from the plant. The plant should dry within 3 hours because it will rot if exposed to water for too long.
The amount of water an air plant desires is tricky because the needs of the plant vary dramatically with the space in which it is placed. Some people swear by misting, others by soaking, and still, others use a combination of both misting & soaking. Here are some general tips:

  • The lighter the plant receives, the more frequent misting & watering.
  • The hotter the temperature, the more frequent misting & watering.
  • The drier the space, as if sunnier or near a heater or fireplace, the more frequent misting & watering.
  • The more natural humidity there is, reduce the misting & watering.

Signs of under-watering include the leaf tips turning brown or crispy. The natural concave shape of the leaves tends to become more exaggerated when under-watered. More frequent misting may be necessary.
Unfortunately, over-watering can quickly kill the plant. If the base of the plant turns brown or black, or its leaves are falling out from the center, the plant has likely succumbed to rot.
FERTILIZER/FOOD:
Usually giving water each week is enough to keep your plant alive. However, your plant may occasionally appreciate an Air Plant fertilizer by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
PESTS/OTHER PROBLEMS:
Not normally bothered by pests or disease.
