RV ROOFS ARE NOTORIOUS FOR LEAKING
Whether it’s a vent, skylight, tear, or slide, it seems to never end. Eliminate the need for costly service calls with Liquid Rubber RV Roof Coating, the easy Do-It-Yourself way to keep your RV dry. You can keep your RV roof leak free with a roof coating that seals and protects the surface to withstand changing temperatures and reflect the sun’s heat and damaging UV rays.
STEP 1: BEFORE YOU BEGIN
IDENTIFY YOUR ROOF
The first step of using RV Roof Coating is to determine your roof’s material.
Here is how to determine RV roof type:
-
EPDM – Smooth & rubbery. White top and black bottom.
Most common RV Roof material. -
TPO – Textured & plasticky. Same color top and bottom usually.
-
Metal/Aluminum – Looks like a metal roof.
-
Fiberglass – Smooth hard gel like surface.
-
PVC/Vinyl – Smooth & plasticky. Same color top and bottom.
If you’re not sure of your RV roof type, take some pictures and email them over to Support@ShopLiquidRubber.com We can walk you through the whole process.
PICK THE RIGHT PRIMER
- EPDM or TPO – Liquid Rubber EPDM & TPO Primer.
- Vinyl/PVC, Fiberglass or Aluminum – Use Multi-Purpose Primer
INSPECT ROOF
You can apply over clean, well adhered Lap Sealant (not silicone). If there is a coating on the roof, an adhesion test is recommended. Please contact us to ensure compatibility.
-
Remove loose, flaking lap sealant.
-
Remove any Silicone Caulking
(usually clear or opaque and rubbery). -
Check for cracks or seams pulling back, coming loose.
-
Look for signs of cracking, peeling, or bubbling.
STEP 2: ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR SUPPLIES
WEATHER & WHEN TO APPLY

- 10C/50F and above, including overnight temperatures
- Do not apply in wet conditions or if rain, fog or dew is forecasted within 24 hours
- Out of hot, direct and intense sun
- Below 80% humidity
- Make sure what you’re coating is at least 5 degrees above the dew point of the environment (Click here for more info)
SET UP YOUR WORKSPACE
Stay organized and limit clean up by following these setup tips
- Set out a tarp or large piece of cardboard to keep containers and tools on when not in use.
- If there is a spillage, soak up as much material as possible with rags.
- Clean your spillages with soap and water as much as possible.
- If the spillage dries, scrape it off with a razor/scraper/etc, use mineral spirits/white spirits to weaken the product, and then scrub with a wire brush.
- Wrap tools in plastic to keep them moist in between coats (kitchen wrap is fine). Best to use disposable brushes and rollers.
- Do not use solvents or solvent based cleaners, adhesives, and paints near your working area.
- Refer to the product Safety Data Sheet for personal protective equipment recommendations.
STEP 3: PREPARE THE AREA
PREPARATION & CLEANING
-
For PVC, Metal and Fiberglass RV Roofs.
Roughen the surface with 120 grit sandpaper 1b. For TPO RV Roofs Sand very well with 120 grit sandpaper -
Clean with Liquid Rubber RV Smart Cleaner for all roof types.
-
Use masking tape for areas not to be painted and remove while the Primer/Coating is still wet. Apply masking tape for each coat.
STEP 4: DETAIL WORK
SEALING RV ROOF VENTS & SEAMS
- Wipe around edges and seams with Acetone soaked rag. *Do not pour acetone directly onto roof.
- Use Liquid Rubber RV Lap Sealant around smaller vents and seams and Liquid Rubber Seam Tape for larger areas that need to be bridged.
- Prime around the vents and edges with appropriate RV Roof Primer. (Do not prime over RV Lap Sealant or Seam Tape)
- When the Primer is dry (EPDM/TPO Primer is sticky when dry), apply a heavy coat of Liquid Rubber RV Roof Coating over the Primer, Lap Sealant and Seam Tape. Leave some of the Primer exposed so you can lap onto it later.
STEP 5: APPLY THE COATING
HOW TO APPLY RV ROOF COATING
- Wipe one side of the roof lengthwise with Acetone soaked rag and apply Primer. Allow 1-2 hours to dry (Primer will remain sticky/tacky).
- Apply RV Roof Coating in a heavy coat over the Primer leaving 4-6 inches of the Primer exposed.
- Once RV Roof Coating is dry (6-8hrs) and you can work on it, wipe the other side of the roof with Acetone and apply Primer.
- Apply RV Roof Coating in a heavy coat over the Primer.
- Once dry (6-8hrs) and you can work on it, apply additional coats in opposite directions until you use up your final recommended coverage. ie. 5 gallons for a 30 ft RV.
- Before applying the final coat, inspect for any differences in thickness, pinholes, or blisters and repair if necessary.
- Remove any masking tape while coating is still wet.
- The final coat cures in 48-72 hours
TIPS & TRICKS

- Some previously applied coatings/
- sealants/paints may affect adhesion. Contact us if you are unsure
