PRODUCT

Product Information

  • Product Name: ROHLOFF HG-Check
  • Model Number: Art. Nr. 3100
  • Description: Wear indicator for Shimano HG sprockets

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Before longer trips and especially before road and MTB races, it is recommended to perform a check-up with the ROHLOFF HG-Check to quickly and efficiently assess the condition of your Shimano Hyperglide sprockets.
  2. If you are planning to change the chain, it is important to use the ROHLOFF HG-Check to determine if the sprockets are worn. A new chain may slip on worn sprockets, indicating the need for replacement.
  3. The ROHLOFF HG-Check is fitted with a section of Rohloff 9-speed chain and is suitable for up to max. 10-speed cassettes. It is also fitted with a section of Shimano 10-speed chain and is suitable for up to max. 12-speed cassettes.
  4. To check the condition of the sprocket, observe the movement of the test roller (5) in the tooth socket. If the roller moves freely, the HG/IG sprocket is still working well, even with a new chain.
  5. If the test roller (5) clutches on the tip of a tooth or needs pressure to be put into the tooth pocket, it indicates that the sprocket should be replaced.
  6. Sprockets with more than 21 teeth are rarely worn out and generally do not cause problems while in use. Therefore, a check-up is normally not necessary. However, you can still check by applying pressure (10kg / 22 lb) on the grip (6) while checking if the measurement chain (1) slips off the tooth profile. If it stays in the profile, the sprocket is still okay. If it slips, problems can be expected under heavy load.

Check it out!

  • A check-up with the ROHLOFF HG-Check informs you quickly and efficiently about the condition of your Shimano Hyperglide sprockets.
  • This check-up should be done before longer trips and especially before road and MTB races, avoiding a surprising chain slip.
  • It is also important before changing the chain because a new chain will slip on worn sprockets. In this case, the sprockets should be replaced, too.

The ROHLOFF HG/IG-Check is fitted with a section of Rohloff 9-speed chain and as such, is suitable for up to max. 10-speed cassettes only.
The ROHLOFF HG-Check is fitted with a section of Shimano, a 10-speed chain and as such, is suitable for up to max. 12-speed cassettes only.

Instructions for use

  • Ensure the cassette and sprockets on either side of the test area are dirt-free prior to use.
  • The enclosed handle (6) should be fixed at the drilled hole at the end of the grip (3) facing out from the side with the logo (fig. I).
  • Place the ROHLOFF HG-Check on each sprocket of the HG Shimano cassette block that you want to check.
  • Sprockets with a tooth count between 12 and 21 should be measured as follows: place the last link of the measurement chain (2) on the sprocket with the test roller (5) inclining slightly outwards and press it against the measurement chain (fig I).

FIG-1

Pay attention to the following when testing 11/12-speed cassettes

  • Apply minimum force to the grip (6) when pushing this in the direction of travel. Now swing the last chain link into position between the cassette teeth (fig. II).
  • Should the last chain link only swing into position with the use of force then the chain is probably rubbing against the adjacent sprockets.
  • Slide the chain sideways upon the sprocket, to achieve clearance to the adjacent sprocket. Repeat the test to ensure clearance is now present.
  • With the other hand press the handle powerfully (ca. 10 kg /22 1b) in the drive direction and swing the test roller (5) in the tooth pocket while the measurement chain (1) is under load (fig. II).Rohloff-3100-Wear-Indicator-for-Shimano-HG-Sprockets-FIG-2
  • If the test roller (5) moves freely in the tooth pocket, your HG/IG sprocket is still working well. Even with a new chain, it will run perfectly.
  • If the test roller (5) is clutching on the tip of a tooth or if you need to use some pressure to put it into the tooth socket, the .sprocket should be replaced.
  • Sprockets with more than 21 teeth are rarely worn out, so they should not cause any problems while in use. Therefore, a check-up is normally not necessary. Nevertheless, you can check whether the measurement chain (1) slips the tooth profile while putting pressure (10kg / 22 lb) on the grip (6) (fig. III).

If it stays in the profile, the sprocket is still okay. If it slips, problems can be expected under heavy load.
