Calibration
STARTER 400D allows you to perform 1-point or 2-point calibrations; Ohaus
suggest 1-point calibration(100% DO calibration) for samples which DO value is
not less than 2 mg/L.
Only when measure samples which DO value is lower than 2 mg/L, Ohaus suggest
2-point calibration.
Zero-oxygen solution
Preparing a zero-oxygen solution: put approximately 20ml of pure or deionized
water into the bottle of DO Zero Oxygen Chemical (30059257, there are about 5g
powder in it), stir for at least 5 minutes.
This zero-oxygen solution is used for 2-point calibration
Performing 1-point calibration
When performing calibration, the meter only uses Auto End Point Mode. 1 point
calibration can be performed in the air or oxygen-saturated water. There will
be a little difference between calibration in the air and in oxygen-saturated
water. Before calibration you need to rinse the DO probe with pure water and
carefully wipe the water off with a tissue.
- Place the probe in the air (or in oxygen-saturated water).
- Press button- , the calibration icon appear on the display.
- The meter reaches endpoints automatically, 100% will display. Measurement icon disappears.
Once you have completed your 1-point calibration, you have 3 options new:
- Press button- to finish 1-point calibration then return to measurement screen.
- Press button- to reject calibration and return to measurement screen.
- Press button- to complete a 2-point calibration (after preparing the zero oxygen solution and putting STDO21 into it).
Performing 2-point calibration
- Perform the 1-point calibration.
- Place the probe in the zero oxygen solution and press button- .
The meter reaches the endpoint automatically. 0% will display then return to measurement screen. Pressing and holding button- will display the calibration data.
Sample measurement
- Dissolved oxygen readings can display unit of mg/L or %.
- Place the DO probe in the sample. Press to start the measurement.
- When the meter reaches endpoint, the measurement reading freezes on the screen
Temperature measurement
For better accuracy, we recommend the use of the temperature probe. If a
temperature probe is used, ATC and the sample temperature are displayed.
STDO21 has a built-in temperature probe.
Barometer pressure measurement
Barometric pressure influences the DO value.
STARTER 400D has a built-in barometric pressure sensor which can measure the
barometric pressure automatically. This meter uses barometric pressure unit
KPa (kilopascal).

Meter maintenance
- The STARTER 400D does not require any maintenance other than replacement of depleted batteries. To clean, use a damp cloth.
- Attention : Do not disassemble the instrument. There are no user serviceable parts inside.
- Attention : The housing is made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). This material is susceptible to damage by some organic solvents, such as toluene, xylene and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Any spillage should be immediately wiped off
Probe maintenance
-
The DO probe measures the oxygen based on luminescence principle. The optical DO probe measures dissolved oxygen by emitting a blue light of the proper wavelength that causes the sensing element to luminesce. Oxygen dissolved in the sample continually passes through the diffusion layer to the sensing layer, affecting the luminescence lifetime. STDO21 can measure the lifetime of the luminescence as it is affected by the presence of oxygen and compared with the reference. This technology has been approved by EPA.
-
When measurement, optical probe did not consume the DO in the sample, that means the sample do not need stir
Optical probe STDO21 do not need to replace the membrane or any maintenance of anode or cathode. The optical probe only requires that its sensor cap be replaced every 12-18 months. Please input the new cap parameter when new probe cap in installed, then do calibration before any measurement. -
When storing the probe for a longer period, make sure it is placed in the wetting protection cover.
-
Calibration frequency: Ohaus suggest verifying the calibration regularly according to your measurement requirement. STDO21 only has very little calibration drift when compared to electrochemical probes. This advantage results in less frequent calibrations. In fact, optical probes are so stable they are capable of holding their calibration for many months.
-
Please also read the STDO21 probe manuals before using it.
