GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Read and follow the safety instructions in this chapter.

WARNING

  • The device is not intended for use by children or anyone with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge. A supervisor should always be present.
  • Store and operate the device in such a way that misuse by children, teenagers and third parties can be ruled out.
  • Do not expose the device or battery to high pressure, impact or excessive heat. Do not operate the device at temperatures higher than +40°C.
  • Do not use headphones in places with traffic, machinery or similar.

CAUTION

  • Risk of hearing damage. Keep the device away from the ear canal  duringoperation. Pay attention to the volume setting of the device, especially when using headphones, and increase the volume only slowly and gradually. If the sound is pleasantly audible, do not increase the volume any further.
  • Battery acid burns. Wear protective gloves when removing leaking batteries from the device. Then clean the contacts on the device with a soft cloth.
  • Only use batteries of the same type. When replacing dead batteries, remove all old batteries and replace them with new ones. Do not mix old batteries with new batteries.

NOTICE

  • Do not submerge the device in water or other liquids. There is a risk of a short circuit.
  • Do not make any unauthorised changes or modifications to the device.
  • Contact Customer Service for repairs.

INTENDED USE

The VOSS.garden HD5500+ metal detector is used to search for ferromagnetic metals in the ground. The device is intended for private use only and not for commercial use.

It must be noted that the use of equipment of this type is for home use only and therefore on your private property. There might exist strict regulations for probe hunters depending on the country. In some cases a permit must be applied. Further information on this can be obtained from the locally responsible office.

INSTALLATION

The plastic rod (E) is packaged in the aluminium tube (C).

  1. Insert the S-shaped tube (A) into the aluminium tube (C) while holding down the push button (B). Snap the push button (B) into one of the openings on tube (C).

  2. Insert the plastic rod (E) into the aluminium tube (C) while keeping the push button (D) pressed. Snap the push button (D) into one of the openings on tube (C).
    INSTALLATION

  3. Insert the latch (F) into the openings on the bottom of the control unit (H) and push the control unit (G) slightly in the direction marked IN on the handle to fix it.

  4. Fix the control unit (G) with the fixing screw (I). Tighten the screw hand-tight.
    INSTALLATION

  5. Remove the locking knob (L) and the associated fixing screw (K) from the search coil (J).

  6. Guide the holes on the search coil bracket (J) over the tube until the openings of the tube and search coil overlap.

  7. Push the fixing screw (K) through the opening and turn the locking knob (L) onto the fixing screw (K). Tighten screw (K) and knob (L) hand-tight.
    INSTALLATION

  8. Wrap the search coil cable (O) around the pipe and plug the connector (N) into the corresponding connector (M) on the control unit.
    INSTALLATION
    NOTICE
    Do not use force to insert the plug. If you want to remove the plug, pull directly on the plug, NOT on the cable.

  9. Stand, extend your arm and hold the metal detector so that the search coil is 1 5 cm above the ground and adjust the length to suit you if necessary.

  10. Finally, turn the lock (P) anticlockwise to fix it.
    INSTALLATION

INSERTING AND CHANGING BATTERIES

The VOSS.garden HD550+ is operated with 9 V block batteries (2 pcs.).

CAUTION
Only use batteries of the same type. When replacing dead batteries, remove all old batteries and replace them with new ones. Do not mix old batteries with new batteries.

  • Batteries are not included.
  • As soon as the indicator light (3) lights up, the batteries must be changed.
  1. Gently press in the battery cover catch (R) and remove the battery cover (R).

  2. Insert two 9 V block batteries according to the polarity.
    WARNING
    Pay attention to the correct polarity of the batteries to avoid battery leakage or explosion and possible damage to persons or the device.

  3. Replace the battery cover (R) on the battery compartment.
    NOTICE
    Remove the batteries before storage.

    CAUTION

  • When searching, the sensitivity can be set to a higher level.

    For soils with high mineral content or electromagnetic interference, it is recommended to set a low sensitivity

  • Metals are excluded in the following order:
    • Iron
    • Nickel
    • Zinc
    • Copper
  • On the final position only silver is recognised

USE

  1. Switch on via the volume control (1).
  2. Turn the sensitivity control (5) to the HIGH position.

  4. Hold the search coil parallel to the ground at a distance of approx. 1-5 cm (see illustration).
  5. Swing the search coil from side to side in slow overlapping movements. Overlap each search to get the best possible coverage

The metal detector needs the movement of the search coil to detect metals. As soon as a metal is detected, the pointer indicator (7) moves to the right, the LED indicators (8) flash and the buzzer sounds.

With the help of the discrimination control (6) you can see what kind of metal was found

LOCATING A FIND MORE ACCURATELY

  1. To locate a find more accurately, hold the search coil 50 cm or more above the ground and press and hold the button (4).

  2. Move the search coil over the area that has been covered.

  3. When the buzzer sounds, release the button (4).

  4. Wait approx. 1-2 seconds and then press and hold the button (4) again.
    The buzzer switches off.

  5. Keep button (4) pressed and move the search coil closer to the ground.

  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until you have accurately located the target area.
    As soon as the search coil is closer to the target, the LED indicators (8) light  upclockwise

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON USE

  • Various factors can influence an accurate result:
    • The angle of the metal lying in the ground
    • The depth of the metal
    • The degree of oxidation of the metal
    • The size of the metal
    • Electromagnetic and electrical interference in the vicinity
    • Metal objects in the vicinity
  • Areas with highly mineralised or wet soil may cause the unit to indicate a find even though no metal is present. Use the discrimination control (6) there and increase the distance between the ground and the search coil.
  • Do not use the device indoors. The device may be disturbed indoors by several factors:
    • Electromagnetic fields from household appliances (microwave, computer, etc.)
    • Floors, walls, etc. may contain metal
  • Do not place coins or similar on the floor for testing
  • The device is splash-proof. If possible, avoid use in wet areas.

Do not submerge the device in water or other liquids. There is a risk of a short circuit.

CLEANING

NOTICE

  • Do not use aggressive solvents/cleaning agents, brushes, sharp objects or similar for cleaning. These can damage the surface.

    Clean the device with a damp cloth if it is dirty

MAINTENANCE

The device requires little maintenance. However, you should carry out regular visual inspections.
Check the device for damage before each use. Regularly check the batteries used for damage.

Do not use the device if there is any visible damage.

TROUBLESHOOTING

NOTICE

  • Do not make any unauthorised changes or modifications to the device.
  • Contact Customer Service for repairs.
    If the device malfunctions or is found to be otherwise defective, even after following the suggested solutions below, contact the manufacturer. The contact details can be found in chapter 17.
Fault/Problem Solution
Device does not recognise metal
  • Make sure that the batteries are fully charged and correctly inserted (see chapter 8)
  • Make sure that the search coil is connected correctly (see chapter 7

Functions of the device are impaired|

  • Make sure that the batteries are fully charged, correctly inserted (see chapter 8) and show no corrosion or signs of leakage.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

NOTICE

  • Pack the device securely for transport. For longer transport distances, it is recommended to transport the device in its original packaging.
  • Remove the batteries before storage.
  • Store the device in such a way that misuse by children, teenagers and third parties can be ruled out.

DISPOSAL

The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on the product or its packaging indicates that the product must not be disposed of with normal household waste. End users are required to hand in the appliance at a collection point for waste electrical and electronic equipment. If the product contains a battery or a rechargeable battery, these should be disposed of separately from the product if possible. As an end user you are legally obliged to  returnused batteries. You can return used batteries that we supply or have supplied as new batteries free of charge to our warehouse (shipping address) or to a recycling centre in your area. If the battery or the rechargeable battery contains more than 0.0005% mercury by weight, more than 0.002% cadmium by weight or more than 0.004% lead by weight, this will be  clearlyindicated by the respective chemical symbol (Hg Cd, or Pb) below the symbol of the crossed-out wheelie bin on the battery or the rechargeable battery. Recyclable materials such as zinc, iron, aluminium, lithium and silver can be found in batteries and rechargeable batteries. They may also contain substances such as mercury, cadmium and lead. These are poisonous and dangerous to the environment if not disposed of properly. Heavy metals can have harmful effects on  human, animal and plant health and accumulate in the environment.
The separate collection and proper disposal of your old appliances and used batteries/rechargeable batteries contributes to the conservation of natural resources and guarantees recycling that protects human health and preserves the environment. Information on where to find collection points for your old appliances or used batteries/rechargeable batteries can be obtained from your town or council administration, the local waste disposal companies or from VOSS GmbH & Co. KG.
