Import a Common Cartridge

Step 1: Import a Common Cartridge (.imscc) File
The common cartridge file contains all materials and resources for a given title. An Instructor or Systems Administrator must import the .imscc file into Canvas in order to view its materials. The common cartridge (.imscc) file and integration pdf (for LTI 1.1) was sent through our ticket system. Please save those to your computer for ease of access.

  1. After logging in to Canvas, open the Canvas course shell to which you would like to add the G-W content.
  2. From the Course Navigation bar, select Settings.
  3. Select Import Course Content.
  4. Next to Content Type, select Common Cartridge 1.x Package.
  5. Select Choose File to upload the common cartridge (.imscc) file that was sent and downloaded to your local hard drive. Next to Content, select All Content and then select the Import button.
  6. The cartridge will now begin uploading. Once it is complete, there will be one issue that arises. Do not worry about this issue as this will be fixed once the External App has been configured.
  7. Select Modules to view the G-W content imported into your course from the common cartridge file.

Configure the G-W External App

Step 2: Configure the G-W External App (LTI) in Canvas
We support LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3. Instructions for LTI 1.1 setup were sent through the ticket system and may be found on the Integration PDF. If you are interested in using LTI 1.3, please submit a ticket (https://support.g-w.com/new/) and request the LTI 1.3 documentation for setup.

Important:
When a Common Cartridge® by G-W is imported, a course-level LTI is automatically added to the course. Canvas will display “1 issue” with a message about the security parameters of the external tool (which will be named “www.g-wonlinetextbooks.com“). There are 2 options on how to fix the issue:

  1. Option 1: Course-level LTI Setup – Some institutions only allow for a course-level setup during the preview period. In this case, the LTI will need to be set up in every course shell that has imported the cartridge with G-W content. (Find these steps below)
  2. Option 2 (Recommended): Site-level LTI Setup – It is best practice to configure the External App/LTI at the site level. Only the Canvas Administrator has permission to do so. This allows for only one setup for all courses rather than setting up the LTI in every course shell. (Find these steps below)

Option 1: Course-level External App (LTI) Setup?
You will need the Integration PDF that was sent through the ticket system for this setup. You can copy and paste information from the PDF to the new app.

  1. On the Course Navigation bar, select Settings. Then select the Apps tab at the top of the page. Next, select the View App Configurations button.
  2. Find the External App/LTI named “www.g-wonlinetextbooks.com” and select the Gear icon to the right. Then select Edit.
    • Note: If you see an italicized “i,” instead of a gear icon then you will need to reach out to your Canvas Administrator for assistance. This means you do not have permission to make changes to the app.
  3. Using the Integration PDF sent with the common cartridge file, set up the External App/LTI by entering the requested information seen below:
    • Configuration Type: Manual Entry
    • Name: Enter a desired name for this app (G-W Publisher, G-W App, Goodheart-Willcox)
    • Consumer Key: Copy and paste the Key (Number 2 on the PDF)
    • Shared Secret: Copy and paste the Secret (Number 2 on the PDF)
    • Launch URL: Copy and paste the Launch URL (Number 1 on the PDF)
    • Domain: www.g-wonlinetextbooks.com
    • Privacy: We like to see “Name Only” for troubleshooting purposes, but this is up to the System Administrator/School District
    • Custom Fields: Copy and paste the Custom Parameters (Number 3 on the PDF)
    • Description: If desired, add a description about this App, such as “Use for Common Cartridge/LTI integrations with Goodheart-Willcox Publisher.”
  4. Select the Submit button. Continue to Step 3 of the Quick-Start Guide.

Option 2 (Recommended): Site-level External App (LTI) Setup?
You will need the Integration PDF that was sent through the ticket system for this setup. You can copy and paste information from the PDF to the new app. You will need to remove the course-level LTI added with the cartridge for the site-level LTI to work.

  1. Select Admin on the Global Navigation bar and then select Settings.
  2. Select the Apps tab and then select the View App Configurations button.
  3. Select the +App button to add the G-W External App.
  5. Select the Submit button.
  6. Now you will need to remove the Course-level LTI that was added with the common cartridge (.imscc) file import.
    • Navigate to the Course Settings and select the Apps tab. Select the View App Configurations button.
    • Scroll down to find the www.g-wonlinetextbooks.com app. Select the Gear icon to the right of the app and then select Delete.

Activate Your Subscription

Step 3: Activate Your Subscription
To gain access to G-W textbook content through Canvas, instructors and students will need to activate a subscription within their Canvas course. Depending on the institution, instructors and students may activate one of two ways:

  • CCL – your school or institution purchased licenses for instructors and students.
  • CCK – your instructors and students will have a key code to enter and redeem; students will receive their key codes by purchasing the code online, or the bundled book which includes the code.

How Do I Know if I Have a CCL or a CCK Common Cartridge?
Systems Administrators and Instructors can tell which type of common cartridge they have by viewing the common cartridge file name sent by G-W Support. Please activate your subscription(s) accordingly using the method your school purchased.

  • CCL (Common Cartridge License) – mrac2025_ccl_110.imscc
  • CCK (Common Cartridge Key) – mrac2025_cck_110.imscc

CCL (Common Cartridge License) Instructor and Student Activation
Institutions that want instructors and students to activate a subscription without the use of an access key code will be sent a CCL. Typically, school districts (6-12) and some technical colleges purchase this type of common cartridge.

  1. Go to Canvas course Modules and find the Resources module from G-W.
  2. Instructors must click on the “INSTRUCTOR – Activate Your Subscription” link to activate their subscription. Instructors should not click on the student activation link entitled, “Activate Your Subscription.”
  3. Students must click on the “Activate Your Subscription” link to activate their subscription.
  4. Please be sure to unpublish the instructor activation link to avoid confusion with students.
  5. Both instructors and students will receive confirmation of successful activation and may now select any link from G-W.

CCK (Common Cartridge Key) Instructor and Student Activation
Institutions whose students are expected to purchase an access key code will be sent a CCK. Typically, colleges and universities and some technical colleges purchase this type of common cartridge. Instructors will be sent an access code by G-W Support and their students will purchase their own access key code to redeem through the activation link.

  1. Go to Canvas course Modules and find the Resources module from G-W.
  2. Both Instructors and Students must click on the “Activate Your Subscription” link.
  3. On the next screen, you will be prompted to type in your 16-digit access key code. Enter the Access Key Code, click on the checkbox to agree to the Terms and Privacy Policy and select Activate Key Code.
  4. Both instructors and students will receive confirmation of successful activation and may now select any link from G-W.

Import Question Bank/Exam Files

Step 4: Import Question Bank/Exam Files
Both System Administrators and Instructors have permission to import question bank/exam files into Canvas once they have activated their subscription. There are two parts to this step: Download Question Bank/Exam Files from the Online Instructor Resources and Upload Question Bank/Exam Files into a Canvas course.

Download Question Bank/Exam Files from the Online Instructor Resources

  • Under the Resources Module, select Online Instructor Resources.
  • The Online Instructor Resources will appear. Scroll down and select the Assessment Software & Question Pools section. Note: The Online Instructor Resources will look different than the screen captures below if your copyright edition is prior to 2023. However, the same instructions apply.
  • Expand the IMS QTI 1.1+ section and select the name of the question type zip folder to download (i.e. Exam Questions, Pretest Questions, Posttest Questions, etc.).

Note:
If you are using a G-W title with a copyright date of 2021 or earlier, please visit our Support Center for next steps: How to Import Question Bank/Exam Files for Copyright 2021 and Older

The following steps are for G-W titles with a copyright date of 2022 and newer.

Upload Question Bank/Exam Files into a Canvas Course

  • Go back to your Canvas course and select Settings.
  • Select Import Course Content.
  • Next to Content Type select Qti.zip file.
